Hi, I am new to the board. I have a question regarding Hyperglycemia? I recently had my labs done and notice on the lab slip that my doctor had put down Hyperglycemia. After I got back my lab results my fasting blood sugar was 97. I was glad of that but, I wonder if it is accurate because I take Glucophage for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. I do have alot of the symptoms for Hyperglycemia. I am around 200 pounds over weight. My sister has hypoglycemia, my oldest brother has type II Diabetes, my father had type II Diabetes and my mother has type II Diabetes. I know sooner or later it is going to catch up with me! I guess seeing it as a diagnosis was a bit of a shock to me. I have a problem with controlling my hunger and cravings for sweets. I binge a lot and the most items I binge on are sweets. Last year I lost 32 pounds on Weight Watchers and was doing real good until the holidays came along and now I can't seem to get back on track. I am totally out of control! My doctor has suggested to me more than once weight loss surgery but, I can't afford it right now. I want to lose this weight on my own and if I just could get the binges and sweet attacks under control I know I could loose weight. I know the odds are stacked against me but I pray to God that I will have a break through and escape the bullet. I just want to be healthy and fit (not a supermodel or actress figure) just healthy and fit. I am glad I found this board, it felt good to vent. I aim open for any suggestions or comments. Everyone have a terrific afternoon. Sunnysummer

Hi Sunny,
Welcome to the forums. Yeah it's difficult, but you know how hard it is to achieve your goal. All you can do is know that loosing the weight will give you a bigger thrill than the sweets could ever do. Plus you will feel 100 per cent. better and get a lot more out of life. Determination is a big factor, so try and get that determination going and if you succeed you won't stop talking about how good you feel. I wish you well in your endeavours and hope you will be successful.

Hi Sunny, Welcome:
I hope you'll find a lot of great information here.

Like you, I had a family history of diabetes...and am over 100 lbs overweight. Was diagnosed with T2 8/31/06 at age 42! Talk about a wakeup call!!! I'm on metformin 500 mg 2 times a day.

Sounds like you have the opportunity to at least hopefully put off diabetes for awhile if you make some very important lifestyle changes.

First, I'd advise you to get a glucose monitor and take your readings 2 hrs after eating...this will allow you to see how certain foods affect blood sugars and learn what really makes yours go high and then avoid them.

Secondly, try and limit your carbs/sweets. Seems the more we eat of these, the more we want. When you cut out sweets and limit carbs, your cravings oddly enough aren't near as bad.

Thirdly, try and get some exercise. I know it's hard when you're really overweight, but force yourself to at least do at least some walking each day--even if you can only walk for 5-10 minutes, DO IT. You'll find that it, too, gets easier and easier each day if you stick with it. If you can't exercise/walk for very long, do it in 5-10 minute increments 5-6 times a day until you can go for longer stretches.

I should have been doing all this all along myself, and didn't, and now i'm living with the consequences (though i'm doing well now at controlling my diabetes).

As for the weight loss surgery, that's certainly an option and must be a personal decision. For me, my doctor has not suggested it, and i've always felt it would treat the symptom, not the disease, so i've not really looked into it. We have several patients in the office where I work who have had it done and have lost weight, but gained several compliations, including kidney stones.

Anyway, sorry to ramble on, but I wanted to let you know I can relate to the challenges you are facing. Hang in there. Try and do all you can do now to turn things around.

Again, Welcome!
