View Full Version : What is the deal with the inserter?

I'm curious about the inserter. I have read posts about the inserter, and about how they insert the infusion set manually. I assume that you would need to know how to put it in manually in case the inserter broke, or you didn't have it with you when you put a new set in. I'm assuming this. Is there any part of this that I'm missing? I feel like a sponge. 7 days till pumping! Thanks!

Each Unomedical Inset comes with it's own inserter...

Some brands come with inserters and some don't. The Quick-sets I use come with one. During my training I was shown how to use the inserter, but was told nothing about inserting without it. I learned that on here and now have a choice!

I used the QuickSerter for months when I first started pumping, and then finally jabbed a set in without it. I never used the Serter after that. I was terrified of the Silhouettes when I switched and I used the Serter for those as ell, even though it was almost as scary as the set itself. My first SilSerter jammed and I was forced to try to insert manually and couldn't do it. I finally got a set in by smashing the button on the Serter with my fist as hard as I could without moving everything around too much. I called MM and they sent a replacement. One day I finally decided to suck it up and try another manual insertion and got a set in. I alternated using the serter & doing it manually for awhile and then gave the serter up completely.

I also used Sof-Sets for awhile and I think the Serter was most helpful for those.

Like others have said, you can use the inserter or not- it's personal preference. I use the Quick-serter most of the time because it makes it easier to insert into the top of my tush, one-handed and without missing when I'm all twisted around. This is particularly true when I'm using my left buttock, as I am right-handed.

The Sil-serter is another story....IMO, that thing is evil!

Good luck- you'll get the hang of it soon enough!

Kimmy.........I know you received your pump and supplies, but can't remember if you're going with the Quick-Set. As far as I understand, you have to ask for the inserter that goes with your infusion set. Mini Med doesn't just send it out to you with your order.

I've never inserted an infusion set manually, and can't picture myself ever doing it on a regular basis. I'm a big baby! LOL

I didn't ask for an inserter, but got one. So someone ... MM? endo? put that on my order. I couldn't imagine at the time doing this without it. I am also a big baby - I tend to faint. :s: First pen injection left me laying on the couch with a wet rag on my forehead and my husband nervously standing by. I've gotten better - out of necessity, but will never do any of this easily. My mother can't believe I can do it at all! I've ... sung "Yankee Doodle" really loud while doing a needle injection - somehow that seemed to help. With the inserter I count to 5 and push on 5 - 3 simply isn't long enough!

JanTX........I'm LMAO! I think we may be twins!

I have a younger brother who's been a type 1 for twenty years.......and I remember saying to him many, many times, "I could never inject myself". Well, that day came four years ago while at my endo appointment. I broke out in a sweat, thought I was going to pass out, and cried like a baby! My endo gave me an insulin pen and after I finally got up the nerve to jab myself in the abdomen, it wasn't all that bad!
