My name is Dustin, I'm 16 years old, and I have Type 1 Diabetes. I was diagnosed at the Emergency Room in the early morning hours of September 28, 2006 with symptoms of Diabetic Ketoacidosis and a blood glucose level of 549 mg/dL. I was immediately transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for a day, and then to Pediatrics for recovery for a few days before going home. Being technologically minded, I have been able to manage my diabetes very well with the assistance of various Diabetes Management Software products. And after about 570 blood glucose checks and 343 injections, I have finally recieved my insulin pump, the OmniPod. I have only had it a few days now, but I am extremely happy with its features and interface, over the other choices that I had available to me.

Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to introduce myself and tell my story to the community. I wish the best of luck to everyone here, and I look forward to communicating with you.

Dustin

Hi Dustin

Nice to meet you. I am relatively new to Diabetes and this forum too. I was diagnosed in 7/2006 as type 1. My first A1C was only 8.2--they found my Diabetes by accident when I went to the doctor for a UTI. And I have been maintaining A1Cs now between 5.2 and 5.9.

After using syringes and pen (junior pen, actually), I am also on the OmniPod now and love it.

I am excited to meet another OmniPod user! Hopefully we can share tips and tricks :) (for instance, I finally just figured out how to put a pod on my arm without the adhesive getting wrinkled!)

By the way, if you are interested in reading a good book on Diabetes and how things affect your body, I highly recommend "Think Like a Pancreas" by Gary Scheiner.

Hi Dustin,

I'm new here as well. I have a lot of questions about this disease, one of which is about Diabetic Ketoacidosis. I've been on diet control for quite sometime now, but have binged off it since the holidays and am concerned that my situation may lead to that, since my glucose has scored high lately. What are the symptoms or does diabetic ketoacidosis only happen to type I diabetics? I've started back on my diet since, and the numbers have gone back down, but still am concerned about this. I guess I could ask my doctor, but my next appointment is not until May. Do you think you could shed some light on this?

One thing you have to bear in mind Confused is that going outside recommended glucose levels leads to problems later on in life. It's something you should seriously consider.

I know MJM,

I'm debating whether I should ask my doctor for those pills just in case I binge or something. It's uncertain right now as to which foods will spike up my BG.

I'm debating whether I should ask my doctor for those pills just in case I binge or something. It's uncertain right now as to which foods will spike up my BG.

And you'll never learn what foods do/don't make your BGL's spike if you don't TEST! This is why we so strongly suggest the people TEST TEST TEST .... Test just before you eat a meal and then test TWO hours after the first bite of your meal, this is the ONLY way you will learn how different foods affect your BGL's.

The pills are not for incase you 'binge'. It doesn't work like that! The pills are for if you cannot, by diet and exercize alone, keep your BGL's in good range!

Good Luck!
