View Full Version : How many basal rates

I don't know how to make a poll otherwise I would. I'm curious how many different basal rates you guys use throughout the day. I've had my pump for four days now and we're fine-tuning and already have three different basal rates (geez, no wonder Lantus didn't work well for me overnight!). I have one rate throughout the day and then at night have another and early morning have another. Is it common to have more than two or three? I think the nurse said I can have up to 48 in one day which seems excessive! But who knows, I'm just starting!

I have a midnight to 7am rate, a 7am to 2pm rate, 2pm to 10pm rate, and 10pm to midnight rate.

I have six different rates. Lantus didn't work very well for me either. I suspect that the more we tune our basals, the more rates we have. I'm not patient enough to fine-tune it any more than I already have.

My basal changes 9 times within a 24 hour period. At least 4 or 5 changes are to compensate for my DP.

3, however I am a big fan of temporary basils because I never know when I am going to go for a run, hit the gym, go for a bike ride, etc.
3: 1am-5am, 5am-4pm, and 4pm-1am. I could probably fine-tune it further if I wanted to, but this seems to be working right now.

Aaron has 4, and a different set on weekends (which is good as long as he remembers to make the switch...).
We went for quite a while with just one though. I can't imagine juggling 48.

I've had up to 6 rates set, but I have 4 right now:
12 am - 4 am overnight lower
4 am - 8 am DP compensation
8 am - 10 pm day/evening
10 pm - 12 am overnight lower
My CDE and endo have tried adding more basal rates based on my logs, but I ended up with more lows. I average 8-10 tests a day, but not the right ones to make basal changes from. Hopefully, my insurance is going to authorize CGMS monitoring for a few days and we will have better data to work from.

Right now I have 6 rates in one program, lowest (.675) for mid to late afternoon and the highest (.875) for the early AM. Haven't gotten around to making another program but I use temp basals liberally to adjust for changes in activity level or illness. Once I realized that 2 or 3 rates wouldn't cut it I just tested around every 2 hrs for a few days to figure out what my BG trends were (especially the DP).

I am running 5 basal rates right now but often use the temp basal. I ride a lot and am at the gym some. Also when driving for more than an hour I up the basal for the time I'm driving. I love the temp babsal feature on my pump.

I have three: 12am to 5am, 5am to 7am (for DP) and 7am to 12. Actually, I suppose it is really just two as the 7am to 5am are the same, it's just that you have to enter them in the pump starting at 12.
When you do a temp basal for the gym etc do you just do a % of the normal? My Endo said 60-80% would be fine for the length of time that you are exercising.
