"And I don't mind switching to new kinds of bread, but with what, pray, can one replace spontaneity?"

I picked this quote off another thread, decided to have a minor rant!! I think the food type I miss most is fresh fruit - I used to have large quantities of pretty much everything, now I have to limit the variety and portions significantly. But the second thing is sponaneity..... I miss the freedom to suddenly decide to out for for a meal without checking the type of restaurent/menu first, or have ice cream at the beach, or make a quick sandwich for lunch instead of chopping up the salads.... I could go on and on, you get the picture!

On the plus side, I have wonderful support from my wife who has totally turned around her way of eating to accommadate the limitations diabetes has placed on me. And isn't fazed by my occasional sense of humour loss when the frustrations win out!

And besides, I actually like salads!

So life is actually OK, rant over!

Funny you should say that about the spontaneity...I have those same feelings, with regularity. I do miss being able to just "go eat."

My husband, however, is not spontaneous....he's a real planner. I don't think this personality type would have near as much trouble as I do. He's not diabetic, but has fallen into my lifestyle now and has much less trouble with it than I do...I think because he has the option of not doing it, while I don't.

I could not agree more! I use to be able to go thru the grocery store without a thought, in record time, quick glance at the labels, throw into cart. If I had a coupon for something not ever tried or just wanted to try something new, I gave it no thought. Now it takes longer to go thru the isles. I also ate fruit constantly and have to watch that now........bananas of all things does a number, or how many grapes I now can munch on.

I've got all kinds of spontaneity....

I never know if I'm going to go for the chicken salad, steak salad or chef salad, right up to the moment I order it! <g>

Sometimes, I really let loose and order ranch or blue cheese dressing instead of oil and vinagar also. Those are my wild side days.

I've only been doing this dieting thing a month and I already hate going to the grocery store. Being a former "junk food junkie" my first stop was always the bakery section to check out what kinds of new sweet rolls and cakes they have displayed. Next stop the candy isle because I just have (had) to have my maple cream chocolates. Now when I enter the store my buggy seems to automatically steer itself to these areas and I have to forcefully aim it at the produce section. Man I hate vegetables!

Man I hate vegetables!

Fortunately, I love vegetables. Ok, I love food. My wife hates vegetables and I have a hard time getting her to fix them, other than a salad, sometimes. Now with the diabetes I ask for more vegetables. Her solution? Cheese sauce. Apparently vegetables go better with cheese sauce. Might give it a try.

Roger

Funny you should mention that because that is the ONLY way I will eat broccoli or cauliflower. I cover them with the Ragu double cheddar that has only about 3 carbs per 1/4 cup. It makes them bearable.

Yep...to eat broccolli...gotta have that cheese sause...even then it's a REAL struggle...if only broccolli could taste like chips or chocolate!

awww Linda, broccoli is good no matter!! ;)

I like it raw, steamed, boiled, and with cheese too! :D
Cauliflower too, just the same! :)

Luckily I'm a veggie eater ... EXCEPT for "greeens" (kale, turnip, collard, etc.) and brussel sprouts too (BLECH!) Spinich is a weird one for me .. only like it from a can! LOL And green beans must either be canned or FRESH, not frozen, don't like frozen green beans at ALL! They taste funny to me! LOL

I always tease hubby, cuz he doesn't like broccoli or english peas, but he'll eat greens! eW! I always tell him "he ain't right"! LOL

I miss the spontenaeity too! I still eat whatever I want, but for some things only in limited and sometimes VERY limited quantities. THAT is what I hate most! When I want it (whatever 'it' may be), and am not able to eat as much of it as I want! :(
