View Full Version : Changing infusion sets every 1.5-2 days?

When I went in for my pre-pump appointment, I was told that I was a good candidate for the pump, but that it would be a challenge because I take so much insulin every day. I was told that I would probably have to change out my infusion sets every 1.5-2 days. I was rather shocked by this, I mean, I had never heard of that before. I was planning on every 3 days. I take 90 units of Humalog daily, sometimes more. What do you all think? Does that sound right?

Why didn't you choose to have a 300 unit reservoir?

I have learned that you don't have to change the set but just refill the reservoir and make it last another day and a half. So after 3 days you should have refilled the reservoir once and kept the same infusion set in. By day 3 you change both the infusiong set out and the reservoir. Does this make sense?

This all happened after I already had my pump and supplies. I guess I didn't think about it before it was all ordered. I didn't know to think about it. lol. No one mentioned it beforehand. What do I do?

Thanks Sandi, yes what you said makes sense!

What kind of pump do you have? Also, my total daily insulin needs went down when I switched to the pump...at least compared to R/NPH and Humalog/NPH...so you may not need to switch every two days.

I have a minimed 722. I'm hoping my insulin requirements will go down. Really hoping.

I have a 722 and use a 300u reservoir.

My needs went from 90-110 down to 60-80.

Awesome Menace, hopefully mine will too.

I don't even remember what size of reservoir mine came with.

My insulin needs also dropped quite a bit when moving to the pump. I bet you won't have any problems with keeping a site in for 3 days. I use approx 60-90 units of Novolog a day right now...

A 722 can use a 300 unit res, now after priming and such that sould leave you with about 265 to 285 units. so if you use 90 units a day, this should give you 2.5 to 3 days. Unless MM sent you the 176 units res's. if they did that, then just call them and tell them you need the bigger ones, they will swap them out for ya..

With the Animas, you can add more insulin to a reservoir without swapping anything out...

If Kimmy uses 90 units of Humalog a day, and is not yet on a pump, she will also likely be using a long acting like Lantus. That also needs to be taken into account for the total pump demand, in addition to the 90 units of fast acting.

I just change the reservoir or the set when they're done. Not necessarily at the same time.

I checked, and my resevoirs are 3.0 ml. Does that mean that they are the 300?:stupido:

I usually change out my set every three days but I do refill my reservoir every day-and-a-half. Unless of course, it happens to be this week where I've kinked every freakin' set after about 4 hours. UGH!

Side note: I'm near Seattle! :D

It seems like a lot of responses are talking about the reservoir, not the cannula. Did your educator say to change the SET or RESERVOIR every 1.5 - 2 days? I do know that the cannula (the part that sticks to your body with the little cannula/tube under your skin) can clog or have problems earlier than 3 days if you use a lot of insulin. As someone else pointed out, is the 90 units you mentioned just Humalog, or your total insulin dose including any long acting? If you use 90 units of Humalog just for your meals/corrections and also use something like Lantus, that would definitely bring your total daily dose to over 100 units. If the 90 units is your total for both types of insulin then I don't think you would have a problem changing everything (cannula, tubing, reservoir) every 3 days. Even if you started to run out of insulin before the 3 days are up, you can remove the reservoir, disconnect the tubing, and add some extra insulin to the same reservoir to tide you over until it's time to change it all out. You would have to reprime, which would waste some more insulin. Or you could just start a whole new reservoir/tubing and connect it to the existing cannula. You don't have to change them at the same time if you don't want/need to.

Well i have been on the pump since 2000, I only change my infusion set every three days, the cartridge and line i change only once a week, I have never had a problem. I use the h-tron plus pump.

1ml = 100 units of insulin you got the pump with the larger 300 unit capacity. Recently got the same one (722) I really like it.

I Don't change my site out with my reservoir. I change out my site ever 2 days just prior to going to bed. I change out my reservoir whenever it goes empty. But I use an Animas, and don't have a clue about MM so not sure if that is possible or not.

I use around 400-450 units of Humalog every day. I change reservoirs at least once a day, usually twice a day (I won't go to bed unless I have at least 100 units left). The only problem I have had is soggy sites (pooling).....and poor absorption after 2 days, especially with QuickSets. Cleo sets I can sometimes get 3 days.

Holy **** talk about a Very high insulin resistance. And I thought my 5 vials of insulin a month was a lot.

Now it does not bother me to use a 200 unit pump, and change out ever other day, but twice a day LoL I think I would hook 2 pumps up to me.

Have you looked into U500 insulin? I don't know much about it, but if I am correct it should cut down how many times you need to refill you pump.

I am sure the young Jedi will chime in with the correct response to U500.

Yes, insulin resistance is me, lol.
I'll ask my dr. about that insulin though.

holy **** 400 - 500 units is what i use in a month. jesus you really need to switch to u-500. that would help you out a lot. maybe you should hook up another pump as well while your at it...

what is your i/c ratio and isf?

I use 150 per day and I thought I had high insuslin resistance...HOLY ****!!

Yes I will...lol.

The problem is as far as I know (and finding U400 and U500 is hard) is that it's only available in R. I think U500 is R and then there's another brand in Europe that is U400 but has the same action profile as R. Basically, one would have to outweigh the benefit of less insulin with that.

Not to mention, one vial of U500 is about $210.

Holy Cow! Thats expensive. I think for now I will hope and pray that the pump will reduce my insulin needs, lol.

I guess I never realy realized how much insulin some people need to take. For me 100 units last 3.5 days. I never fill my 722 all the way up. I have a bad habit of laying on top of my pump when Im asleep, so Im afraid my body heat will ruin the insulin.
