In Genesis when God told Adam that he could eat of every fruit of the Garden, it clearly indicated that fruits were to be part of the human diet. The diet of Adam was vegetables and fruits.

One of the fruits in the garden was figs, which is very sweet.

If fruits were bad, we would see animals and societies that are largely fruitarian being sick with diabetes and all kinds of diseases, yet most fruitarian animals and human societies are pretty healthy.

Of course some like Dr. Bernstein believe that fruits should be avoided by diabetics, because of their high fructose content. I know he is a smart doctor, for I follow some of his recomendations, however I disagree with his ideas of avoiding fruits.

However let us realize a few things.

In nature fruits are not as sweet as modern fruits. Most store bought fruits have been bred for their sweetness so it is true that their fructose content is higher than normal. In order to avoid a high spike of BG we need to realize that modern fruits can be eaten, just in small portions.

Of course a diabetic should avoid juicing fruits, becasue juicing creates high levels of frutcose. The fiber in fruits keep some of the fructose from being released quickly into the system. Not only that but the fiber in the fruits help in the digestive process and keeps a person regular.

Another great benefit from fruits is that besides Fructose, they are loaded with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are necessary for good nutrition. Some of them like grapefruits actually help in weight reduction and others help to prevent other diseases.

As a diabetic, I do still eat fruits, for I need their nutritional value, however I make my portions small to avoid a high BG rise.

I eat fruit on a regular basis, usually banannas, apples or pears. On average, I estimate them to be 30g of carbs. I usually eat them between breakfast and lunch or between lunch and dinner so a 30g carb load 2 hrs or so after a meal doesn't cause me any difficulty.

When my RD/CDE educated a group of us about diet, there was never any caution about fruit other than to avoid juices and large (read high carb) portions.

Grapefruit can reduce the efficacy of some medications so it should be eaten with that caution in mind.

My last A1C was 5.6, I will probably be taken off meds next check in April.

I eat lots of fruit. I find it generally behaves very well. I buy those bags of frozen mixed fruits. A scale is a must though. I do avoid or limit fruit juice.

God told non-Diabetic-Adam that he could eat of every fruit of the Garden.
I wonder what God would have told Diabetic-Adam, "Go easy on the fruit"?

I believe that all "natural" foods are good for you, but the rule of all things in moderation definately applies! I eat all sorts of fruits and have no real problems with it. Juice is another story. Spikes me too high! I reserve it for correcting lows!

i drink motts lite apple juice for breakfast... cause in the winter time its harder to buy fruits... as they are so expensive... i still buy them just not as much.

its only got 15 carbs per 8 oz cup, i think a real servin size is 4 oz. so im getting two fruit servings a day at least, and more if i eat applesauce (no sugar added) etc... until the prices on fruit lower in the spring i cannot afford to eat them that often...

and i bought the frozen fruits... but i just dont like them at all... i like them in there original texture not mushy

While pregnant with my daughter I developped a taste for dates. I would eat one and wanted to eat more. A bit like peanuts! When you start you can't stop. Needless to say BG went straight into the stratosphere...!!! Even eating one would have catastrophic effects and since that little life inside me was suffering because of it well I gave up the dates. Dates are something I still can't have unless I want to suffer from blurred vision, fatigue, and going to the bathroom 72 times a day. Ah well!

I have found that low GI fruits especially berries have little or no effect on my BG (in moderation). Frozen raspberries are especially good. High in fiber, low in sugar. Blueberries, strawberries also good.. for me anyway.

As far as bible-type-foods go, Pomegranite is also a good one for low GI. Though they are a pain to gut.

I'm not really up on societal eating habits, but is there such a thing as a frutarian society : a group of people that lives primarily off of fruit? My instinct tells me that grains and meats of some sort are mixed in by most if not all societies, especially biblical ones where fruit was probably common, but not abundant enough to live off of. That's one of the approachs I take with food: mix it up. But I am following yours too: go back to simple, natural foods.

dear xMenace

It is hard to find any society that is 100% dependent upon any one type of food.

There is no such thing as a 100% fruitarian society, however when I say fruitarian society I mean those societies where fruits are a high percentage of the diet.

Some people like the polynesians and the caribeans have a diet high in fruits, but hey also eat other thing like fish and other foods.
