Just found this site today. I'm a 55-year old, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes six months ago. Since I found out about my diabetes, I've managed to get things under control pretty well... a physically demanding job as a rural mail carrier definitely helps!! As does a prescribed diet, and faithful, three times a day glucose testing.
Anyway, glad to be here, and will probably be asking for a lot of advice in coming weeks.
Cheers,

Welcome MKP:
Glad you're doing well with your diabetes. It can be scary and frustrating at times, but with the right attitude and lifestyle changes and good medical care, it's certainly doable.
Sounds like you'll be getting plenty of exercise carrying mail.
Even though you didn't ask for advice, i'll throw some in for free (it will be worth what you paid for it). As a new diabetic, the most important thing you can do is test, test, test. While you're learning the proper foods to eat, i'd suggest you test 2 hrs after you begin eating your meal, that way, you'll be able to see how certain foods affect your levels, thereby knowing what foods you need to avoid. Keep a log at first, until you get use to things.
Also, be sure and follow-up with your doc regularly. It's easy not to when you're not on medication, but proper f/u is very important.
Again, welcome. There's a lot of great folks here. I hope you find it as encouraging and supportive as I have.

Thanks for the reply... and the advice! Actually, I'm already doing pretty much what you advise here... testing three times a day minimum (usually once a day before a meal and twice a day after a meal.) And you're right about the fact it's made it easier for mw to see what foods are OK and what foods I must avoid. So far, so good. Since my diagnosis on June 24 '06, I've dropped 36 pounds, and my a1c has dropped from 7.8 in June (my initial test)to 5.9 at my most recent (and third) test (taken last week).
Hopefully I can keep it up for the long term.
Thanks again for the advice. It's greatly appreciated.

I'm from the Boothbay region, about 25 miles ENE of Bath. I almost have a view of the water from my house.
