I was wondering if any of you have run into the same frustration I have in the past year. I have had a difficult time finding an endo that knows as much (preferably more) about pumping, basal rates, basal rate profiling, iob, carb ratios, insulin sensitivity rates, etc. than I do (please don't take this as arrogant...I really want to find one I feel like I can learn from). The past two endos I went to I had to explain things about the pump to them. And I use a Minimed. Seems a common pump, but both of them needed a "mini-lesson" on basal rates and changing them. The most recent prob I had was a new one telling me to get my "fasting" bg down. He wanted me to change all my basal rates by adding .1 unit to them. I said, "OK, I'll trust you, but everytime I have increased that much (a total of .9 units more) it has sent me low." So, low and behold...did it...and low.
I have just had a tough time with feeling like these endos know some about a lot of the different "versions" of diabetes, rather than a lot about some of the different types.
I feel like we have had to compete for the time and attention of endos when their major focus seems to be on Type 2 (non-pumping) diabetes. (Please don't take this the wrong way...I think it is very important for some of the endos to focus on this.) I am sure this is due to the numbers of T2s out there, but I would love to be able to find an endo that focuses their practice on T1s/pumping.
I have emailed my local Minimed rep, and I live in a major metropolitan area (DFW), so I'd think in this entire area there'd be a doctor that specializes. But just felt like ranting...if you have any suggestions or ideas, yes, I would love to hear them.
I just wonder if I am the only diabetic on here that wishes the field of endocrinology had more specializations within it. Doesn't the field of oncology (study of cancer...right?) study several different types of cancer? Just wondering what you guys do about this...I feel like I have learned more on this forum (yes, I do know not to take any of this as medical advice) than I have from my insurance paid doctors. And as I have heard on here before...we have to act like a full-time nurse for ourselves. :)
Don't mean to ramble...but oh well...
