View Full Version : Pump and Heat

if anyone is outside in high heat and humidity--Please COVER your pump...I was camping and the weather was in the high 90's. I was outside riding my bike, walking, hiking and just talking to other campers.
the heat changed the chemical composition of the insulin and i started to get really sick. At noon, it was high but I bolused for it but in 2 hours, it went up to 486 and kept going higher. I ended up in a hospital in another state because it was the closest to the campground.
to make a long story short--now I wear a cool pack in front of my pump when outside in hot humid weather and it sure has helped.

wow susie....that is really scary...i was in hot weather down in jamaica and mexico i had no problems with the heat at all!! maybe because you were in direct sunlight or something you think? the cool pack is a good idea!! Ill try to use one too. Im always out in the sun

We recently went on a cruise to the Caymans and to Mexico. I was concerned about the heat too. So during the days off the boat on excursions, I went back to shots. I did a lot of scuba diving, so the pump was out of question anyway. I tell ya, it felt great to take a little "vacation" from the pump for a day. But, my question is: how to you attach the cool pack? I do like tp play outside during the summer and that sounds like a great idea. Thanks for your help....

Thanks Gina and Cront. Minimed and my doctor felt that because I have to wear my pump in a black leather case with the material that absorbs static (Some sort of metal), that because of the intense heat I was in and yes-direct sunlight ,that the temperature actually doubled and that is why the insulin changed. And it happened fast-I was SUPER sick and totally dysfunctional (more then ususal ;-)) I have always wrapped the pump in a towel after swimming when I rehook and had no problems but now if I am out I use the blue ice or the plastic container ?(forgot name)--they both melt the same.
How do I wear the ice--So far-I put the blue ice or the plastic container in a baggie--it sweats in hot weather--and I bought a waist pouch (men or women can wear this) I put the ice in the back zipper compartment and place the purse--over my pump--It is a little inconvenient because I run -walk 3 times a day and it bounces on the pump but doesn't seem to hurt it so far.....
Also , if I have a big pocket in my shorts--I put the ice and the pump together in my pocket--now that 's a real thrill LOL leg gets cold.
Sometimes it is easier to put the pump and the ice together in the purse because it is not bouncing all the time.
If anyone has any ideas--sure will welcome them.
Minimed needs to make white leather pouches because white reflects heat and black absorbs heat ....

susie,
Let me ask you something? doesnt the pump get too cold if you have that ice pack so close to the pump? Wouldnt it short out the pump or something? I dont know !! Where i live we have these mini ice packs that i use to keep my insulin cold, they work pretty good...that would probably be easier for you to keep in your pouch...my other question is if your using the waist pouch why woulod you put your pump and the ice pack in your pocket? you can run with the waist pouch...ive actually seen people running with them on all over the park...i would just put the pump right in the back of the waist pouch with the ice pack in the front so it doesnt actually hit the pump...i think that would be much easier than how your doing it now...

Hi Gina
No if I put the ice pak and the pump together--it doesn't get cold. I always wear my pump in the protective cover--and it is leather and a metal of some sort and it seems to be OK in hot weather.
I put the pump in my pocket because when I put the pump and the ice together in the waist pouch--when I run it hits where the infusion set goes into my stomach and that makes it sore.Thank you for the info--I try to wear the pouch on the side of my hip-but with running--it still slides to the front.

they have these new pouches that go in the back instead of the front...try and see if you can find one
