Hi I'm new to this board and going to start using Acomplia. I was hoping to find information about Acomplia. I'll start in a couple days after my cholesterol tests come back so I'll come back and post my experience with it. I'm still a little nervous as I've heard that depression is a side effect. I'm not really prone to depression so I'm giving it a month.

Just a little background on me. I'm a 41 year old American who moved to Sweden 2 years ago (longgg story). I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (diagnosed age 12), have been overweight since age 6 (just after suffering mono), and was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic December 2002. That was probably what saved my life. I read, re-read, and re-read Gretchen Becker's book and really worked on understanding diabetes so I could control it.

I started out with an A1c of 9.7 using 4mg Amaryl and now have a 5,1 with 1mg Amaryl. My cholesterol is good and my blood pressure is excellent. The problem, is although I lost 100lbs the first year, something happened and I have lost nothing since. I'm still roughly 140 lbs overweight which is why I'm going to start using the Acomplia as long as my thyroid levels are all normal. I've thought long and hard about it and just think the risks of heart attack are too high for me.

If anyone else out there has tried it, I'd be interesting in hearing their experiences with it.

Suzanne

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Hello
i started acomplia just a week ago. Apart from some very mild nausea and feeling that i will throw up had no other side effect. Those side effect come about twice a day but do not last for more than one minute.
My first week i lost 750 grams. I am not so much overweight so i guess in your case you should lose much more.
Do not get carried away by this, you must also help yourself and try to cut on food intake, acomplia will help in that it makes you either not want to eat at all of feeling full too quickly. And when you think you get a craving you can easily overpower it.
Be carefull with hypos as we diabetics can't affort going on without anything to eat. special care should be given late evening, as this is the time you will feel most hungry and you will also get hypos if you have not eaten something to keep your BG in range.
You are the first diabetic acomplia user i find in boards so please give any feed back after your first week.
i am on 30 units lantus plus 3x850 glucophage daily.
Good luck

you may want to read this article

Junkfood Science: Junkfood Science Exclusive: “What if you could pop a pill and lose weight?” (http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com/2006/12/junkfood-science-exclusive-what-if-you.html)

it's by a skeptic - her particular stance is that the risks of obesity are exaggerated and she writes about obesity/diet treatments that she believes do more harm than good. And so should be read bearing this in mind.

while I'm not going to comment on the relative merits of taking the drug, you may want to keep a careful watch out for the potential side effects of taking the medication - there is a list towards the end of the article.

you may also want to consider the drugs effectiveness - typically it will help you lose an extra 10lbs over dieting alone, and the results seem to indicate that stopping the drug will cause you to regain the weight you lost, so you may have to take it on a permanent basis to maintain your weight loss.
