Just curious...how long were you on your initial treatment for your diabetes before having to have it adjusted, up or down or changed completely? What did you start on and what were you changed to?
I'm on metformin 500 mg 2 times daily so far.

I went on fast acting metformin 500mg in May when diagnosed. My A1C were great, so doctor thought to try me off meds, which was a mistake. I had purchased the computer program where I could download my meter and he saw I had many highs and lows which when averaged out, gave me 'good a1c" so now I am on 750mg slow acting metformin, and my numbers are in better control.

When I was first dx in June last year, I was put on Metformin 500mg then she upped it to 1000, then to 1500 and then she added 30mg Actos. BS still was in the 300's average. Then she upped it to 2500 Metformin. Still wasn't doing anything. I gave up on her and went to Endo...She immediately put me on Novalog. Said I was a type 1 and that metformin wasn't going to do the job. She also put me on Lantus and symlin. We have finally gotten my bs pretty stable. I go in the morning for 3 month blood work-up. :nurse: We'll see how my bs is doing.

I might be unusual but metformin did nothing for me but upset my stomach. I had immediate results with Amaryl (4mg). I continued to lose weight and am now on 1 mg. It's more expensive than metformin but I have been happy with it. For a while, I did have to watch out for lows, which has been the only drawback for me.

It has been about 20 years since I was diagnosed. Started on the 1st generation pills, progressed up and through all of them until this last spring. In April, started on insulin...NPH with Amaryl first then MDI with Lantus/Humalog and finally on the 4th of January got a Cozmo pump. So I guess I can say..Been there. done that, got the T-shirt.

I don't remember, it was too long ago. I just remember that pills never worked, though many doctors took me off of insulin and put me on pills, thinking that I was a type 2. I finally got a doctor who knew what tests to do and found out I was a type 1. I guess it was good that I never went into DKA while playing around with idiot doctors who stereotype people, thinking that if you're overweight you're automatically a type 2.

When first dx'ed I was put on Metformin 1000mg once a day and Glipizide 10mg once a day. After a couple weeks, doc upped those to twice a day each. Then I kept having lows in the middle of the night (4-5 nights a week) so doc took me off the night time dose of Glipizide. Over the past few months, the meds have been slacking off and my numbers getting higher and higher, so this past Monday, doc took me off the Glipizide and put me on Novolin 70/30 and Novolin R. All taken place over the past 1-1/2 years.

:) Just found out in December of 06, so I go back to doctor on March 23rd. BS am. running 85-157, pm 67-124 still working on getting things figured out! Doing Treadmill 30-40 min a day and so far have lost 23lbs.... Doing Low/No Carb thing. Hard a couple of week-ends had to have some Beer, so I know I have to quit or really monitor to keep B/S under Control...
So in March I will know if the meds are working.

I'm on metformin 500 mg 2 times daily so far.
Pills worked for about 11 years for me, changes every couple of years. Metformin, Actos, Glipizide, Precose, Starlix. Higher doses or additional meds added. A1c in the 6 to 8.5 range
I've been on insulin for about 4 months now, my next A1c should be well under 6. I really really dislike the injections, but they work well. Hopefuly, I'll have a pump soon.

I've been diabetic for 8 years, and started on Glucophage, moved to Metformin, reacted to Avandia, added Prandin, and eventually went back and forth between Metformin with Glucotrol XL.
Thinking I was having a skin reaction to Glucotrol XL, my Dr. halved the doseage, and my sugar, naturally, went nuts. Things spiralled from there, and in a matter of two months, I was being admitted to the hospital for a leg infection, and since then I'm on Lantus and Byetta, Actos and Prandin.
My numbers have never been better, fasting at 104, meals at 77-88. Losing weight, too.

Avandia 4mg for over four years. Was going through bad times with my mother's health (stress) and the doctor uped it to 8mg. Been there now for 1.5 to 2 years. Want to save Met for when I retire since it's the cheapest.

I have been on Metformin too.......it worked and then my NP tried to get me to wean off of it. Well, between the weaning and the stress I have been under lately my numbers are biserk. Also, my NP has me on Phentermine for weigh loss. Well, I have worked out 5 nights out of week for one hour since december and lost NOTHING........now, I have been reading about Byetta....did it really make a difference?

I was initially diagnosed as a type 2. It wasn't until about 5 years later that they figured out the meds were not working as they should and discovered I was really type 1...

My meds worked for 6 years before they quit working and I went on insulin. It was a gradual thing, until they just simply didn't work anymore.
