Thank you for your time!!

Did you know that many children with diabetes in Illinois schools are unable to monitor their own blood sugar in class? Instead they must go to the nurse or principal's office to do it. For a child who needs to test three times during the school day, this adds up to 45 hours of missed classroom time each year. For children who are capable of taking care of their diabetes themselves, this is a time-consuming, costly and potentially dangerous policy.

Rep. Tom Cross has introduced a bill that would help ensure that children with diabetes have a supportive environment to help them take care of their diabetes throughout the school day. The Illinois Care of Students With Diabetes Act (House Bill 146) will permit students to self-manage their disease during school. It would also allow volunteer non-medical school personnel to be trained to administer Glucagon, a medication used in diabetic emergencies to bring glucose levels up from dangerous low levels, if a nurse is not present. The training may never come into use, but if you're a parent of a child with diabetes, wouldn't you want it available?

It will take just two minutes to help make a difference in lives of children with diabetes in Illinois. Please contact your state representative and ask him or her to support the Illinois Care of Children With Diabetes Act.
