What does everyone think of the news about milk? They have now patented a new milk "Dairy O Milk" that contains Omega 3 oils (DHA's). This is done by feeding the cattle a ground up fish as food and ground chicken feathers it seems. This mixture has increased the omega 3 's in the milk produced which most people are short of in their diet.
Is this turning our milk into something more than nature intended it to be??
Am drinking Vanilla Rice Milk now so am not sure how I would feel feeding my children this milk but it seems to be heathy and approved with added Omega 3's. Omega 3's help ones immune system so maybe there won't be as many children who get diabetes when their immune systems don't react appropriately to viruses. That would be a real breakthrough.
What do the rest of you think about this new developement?

Most interesting since I'm not much for fish. Tell me if I'm wrong, but are Omega 3 oils supposed to help cholesterols. Like lowering LDL, VLDL, Total, and raising the HDL level?
Well if it does I'm all for it.

Omega 3's help heart and vascular disease Harold and boost the immune system. I did not specifically read that it benefited the lipid metabolism. Perhaps it just keeps those lipids from depositing in our vessels.<smile>
A pharmaceutical grade of Omega 3 oils is recommended for use as a key supplement to prevent type 2 diabetes along with a multiple vitamin/mineral supplement and green drink(s).
My brother-in-law was headed towards a type 2 and was on high blood pressure pills and heart pills. All his aunts and uncles were type 2 diabetics. He used the purified form of Omega 3 oils and a good multiple vitamin/mineral supplement with a good walk around the block daily routine and he is now off all meds and has lost lots of wt. which made his bgs return to normal. I believe he used a similar diet to the zone diet also. Eliminate all bread and pastas and rice and potatoes. Divide your plate in 3 -fruit, veg and meat (protein). This worked for him. I was amazed cause he finally read the books I gave him years before and this is what he came up with.

From Study (http://www.nutrition.gov/framesets/frameset.php3?topic=food%20facts)
Question
Diabetes
* What is the evidence in adults or children with a) type II diabetes, or b) insulin resistance/the metabolic syndrome for an effect of omega-3 fatty acids on:
o Total cholesterol.
o HDL cholesterol.
o LDL cholesterol.
o Triglycerides.
* What is the evidence in adults and children for an effect of omega-3 fatty acids on insulin sensitivity in a) type II diabetes, or b) the metabolic syndrome?
Results
Diabetes/Metabolic Syndrome
Among 18 studies of type II diabetes or the metabolic syndrome, omega-3 fatty acids had a favorable effect on triglyceride levels relative to placebo (pooled random effects estimate: -31.61; 95% CI, -49.58, -13.64) but had no effect on total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, fasting blood sugar, or glycosylated hemoglobin, by meta-analysis. Omega-3 fatty acids had no effect on plasma insulin or insulin resistance in type II diabetics or patients with the metabolic syndrome, by qualitative analysis of four studies.
In Discussion
We offer the following observations and recommendations regarding future research on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on lipids and glycemic control in type II diabetes and the metabolic syndrome and on inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, renal disease, SLE, and osteoporosis:
* Additional research on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids needs to be performed on inflammatory bowel disease, renal disease, SLE, bone density, or fractures or the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on insulin resistance among type II diabetics before recommendations regarding the use of omega-3 fatty acids for these conditions can be made.

Are omega3s found in all types of fish and chicken?

Not sure about chicken. However I do see fish, vegetables, and walnuts commonly listed.
