I was wondering if any of you who have experienced being on Lantus could share them with me. My doctor has just put me on it, and I start tomorrow. But I am taking it 2 times in the day, and it seems most others only take it once? Any information would be great. How it helped control, etc. Thanks so much!!! :D

Lantus is supposed to give you 24hr cover for Basal, but in a lot of cases it doesn't last that long. So we tend to end up splitting it to give a more even cover in the background. I also use lantus and split it into two doses.
It works for some, but some people dont like it... everyone is different!

I also take Lantus. My endo put me on it and said to take it in the morning. When I saw on here there were others who were splitting it up I split mine, too. I told my endo about it and she saw that my results were more consistant. So she nows has suggested other patients do the same as I did. Of course I didn't get any money out of the deal!!! :D

Well when I was first put on Lantus it was like a dream come true, I didn't have to stop and eat lunch cause it was my insulin's peak, it gave me a lot more freedom, and I never had too many issue's with it honestly till recently, because I think my insulin requirements have gone down, so I am still in a balancing act, sometimes I think I am going to need two shots a day but then there are nights that it seems to work.............I'd say number one thing to do with this med, is keep the same activity level, if you are regular with that then it will work, if your activity level varies all the time then it might be a little rocky......I am trying to do something active everyday now and so far the dose i am on is working better then if I am just lazy all day........if that makes any sense to you.............but it is a heck of a lot better than the older insulins

I also split my Lantus dose and have done for most of my time on it (a little over 4 years). Like everyone else has mentioned, it provides better 24-hour coverage, at least for me. When I was on one dose (at nighttime), my glucose levels would start to creep up late afternoon/evening. Seemed to only last ~18 hours before peetering out. And yeah, it's another injection, but I think it's well worth it. What's one more when you're on 7 or 8 anyway? :D

Hi,
I've been on it for a few years now, but only really understood how it was supposed to work about 6 weeks ago....
I only do 1 injection a day at around midnight. It seems to work OK for me like that. No peaks, troughs etc. I travel lots during the day, so not having yet another piece of diabetic gubbins on my person (i.e. my 'nightime' pen) is welcome. That and the 'ain't broke, don't fix it' is the reason why I'm sticking to the one dose at the moment.

I've been using Lantus for about 2 years. I inject once a day in the morning. I think it's great. Much better than the other stuff. At first it seemed to last about 22 hours, but it definately works 24 for me now. I think it has got better over time. Best thing is no night time hypos!
I started Lantus just a few months ago, took two jabs a day right from the beginning, as my Endo advised. I know it can be good as a once a day jab but I get the feeling twice a day works better for a lot of people. I guess it's sorta like the law of small numbers - splitting in two means less of a peak (Lantus is a peak-less insulin, but it has two small peaks... hmmmm!) Less chance of going haywire if you miss one dose (still half a dose in you to help you out) and most people have been on a twice daily injection before moving to Lantus, so sticking to the same routine can help.
Lantus for me has meant freedom! I don't have to have my meals on time, I don't have to have extra carbs at lunch time to avoid my old peaks, and I have a background BG level that's almost smooooooth. I love it :)
In the end of course, we just have to figure out what works for us individually. Good luck!

Thanks for all the comments everyone. :D
I am on day 2 of Lantus and NovoRapid. Day one was amazing, I felt a huge difference, my BG was pretty out of wack as of resently so it was nice to be in range for the entire day! Today I have been running a little high, but still a lot better than what I have been. Also both days I have ran low at the exact same time, about 2 hours after I eat lunch. I guess we'll have to see if that trend continues I'll probably just lower my bolus for lunch if it does.
I definitely love the insulin pen Lantus comes with. I wish I could use it for the NR too.

Which pen is that? - I'm seeing the endo tomorrow to start on Lantus, apparently there are a few different pens?

I started out on lantus but had a few side effects...mainly hungry 24/7 and it stung every time. For me the ph was off. Other than that it's great. Do you not have a pen for your novo rapid? I find the novo pens much nicer to use. I've since switched to levemir (same action as lantus) and it never stings and the pens both fit in one case which I like 'cause there's less to haul around.

I was also hungry all the time on Lantus, but thought it was my hormones or some other such coincidence. I mean, insulin is insulin, right? How could it possibly cause anything apart from lowering the BS? But after a month of eating like a weight lifter, I went back to Protaphane or whatever it was I was using. I never tried Levemir though.

I mean, insulin is insulin, right?
No, it's not. 'Insulin' (as in what you inject, as opposed to what your body produces) is insulin and at least a dozen other ingredients, any of which could have strange affects on you. For instance, the zinc in Insulatard impairs your hypo awareness.
I *heart* lantus... for me it has opened doors (mainly being able to be flexible)
Completely off topic, but in reference to the "other ingredients in insulin that can give you any number of reactions" I just realized that I am allergic to Novolog, but only if I apply it externally. How did I come to this realization you ask... I had always noticed a little itching if the Novolog dripped back out onto my skin, but thought it was just a wonky injection, not so. A few days ago I had a mishap which resulted in me squirting myself with the Novopen... I practically broke out in hives! It felt like the chicken pox. But I've sensitive skin to begin with.

It's an "Autopen 24".

I use a novo pen for my novorapid, I have been using it for many years with T/NPH. I find the autopen way easier to use.

I hate the autopen24 but you can have the lantus in a novopen3 however there is a difference in the doses.
The lantus by itself is quite good when you concider that the peak in the middle of the night worryies are almost eliminated!!
I love the novopens :thrasher:
