Hello, I am Sandy B, an elder , age 68 yrs. old, new to me, diabetic, type 11, last week heard from my Dr. Wanting to adjust to this new way of rethinking my diet,etc... The Dr. told me to just take this pill everyday for diabetes, for a year, and to stay away from sugars. Confused about diet, what to eat now, as I do want to eat more healthy for a diabetic. Any suggestions?

Welcome Sandy B!
They stopped calling it type ll just before they changed it to NIDDM. Then it changed again to type 2 when they decided it was confusing. It's still confusing! :)
The diet thing, eat lots of veggies with meat in moderation, and take it real easy on the tubers. Starches are almost in the same league as sugar so have them sparingly. Oh yes, test to see how you respond to different foods it's really the only way to tell. The amount you have also will have an affect. Some times I have a 1/4 or 1/2 cup of rice and I am okay, but 3/4 cup can make me 80 or a 100 points higher. Guess it's a threshold thing.

Welcome Sandy!! Lots of great info and friendly folks here. Look around, you'll find lots of answers.
For me, I try to avoid breads, rice, pastas, potatoes and sugar. I eat low carb and exercise regularly. I'm on an oral medicine as well.
Again, Welcome to DF.

Welcome Sandy, plenty to learn and you will continue to learn each day. I was just recently diagnosed also. But I have learned not to eat "white breads, pasta, rice, potatoes" There is a pasta called Dreamfields which is good and takes care of craving spagetti LOL. check out here on the boards, it is a matter mostly of watching portion control, counting carbs, reading labels, etc. It can be overwelming, but a lot of this is common sense. Learn which foods tend to spike you, and always test, this is your guideline to help you on to the right track
Talk with your doctor, ask all questions you can think of. Make a list to take when you see him, have him refer you to a dietician. Post and ask questions here.
