Fellow gourmets,
Another question:
I imagine we all eat chinese take-out (maybe not all), but, here goes:
When eating chinese food, I tend to cover different things in different ways.
If I were to have a mainly veggie dish, such a chop suey with chicken breast meat, I would consider that
a low or no-carb dinner and cover accordingly.
but ...... to add fried rice, the meal suddenly becomes a high carb, and high fat meal, and I am back to using a dual bolus to cover the rice, fortune cookie (gotta have desert) combo.
any recommendations and/or suggestions here.
I suppose what I am asking, is how otheres cover for fried (or white) rice, and similar chinese dishes.

I always ask for white rice, as much as I love the fried rice. I try (mostly good about it) to eat only 1/2 the rice that is given as that is about a cup of rice. Takes some will power, but I eat about 1/2 of the meat and veggies before I eat any rice as I find that I am full about the time the rice and main course is done. And your right, always got to have that fortune cookie.

For me, sometimes I will mix the white rice with an equal amount of fried rice, but, white rice tends to have less flavor (... not the right word), or less seasoning, so, need to help it along with some seasoning.
The fried rice has better flavoring, so, seems to go down better.
You are correct about the measures, 1/2 of the rice portion is usually around 1 cup, and carbs do add up.
The other thing .... fat (if fried rice) .....

Chuck, like any high fat, high carb meal (like this and pizza, for example)...if you eat it, you will have to bolus extra. Steamed white rice is better than fried white rice, but white rice is pretty high glycemic, anyway, so it's going to impact most people faster than brown rice.
When I eat Chinese food, I put just enough rice on the plate to mix a couple of grains in with each bite. It also helps to go for the veggies and non- batter fried lean meats (like white meat chicken).
Hope this helps.

I don't eat that much Chinese. As a whole, it is a pretty starchy type of food, especially the rice. I find that rice sends my sugars way up, and that's not a good thing. :( What I do order sometimes is the steamed vegetable dumplings and wonton/eggdrop soup mixed. I think those are among the healthier things on the menu.

I usually avoid the stuff. On the rare occasion I do eat it, I don't have any rice, but most of my fav's are high carb. I generally take around 5-7 units of H, and cross my fingers for my fasting b/s the next day, which is usually screwed up.

Kung-Pao Chicken Fella here.
This is one with which I have much trouble.
Aprox. 1/4 cup of white rice, Large amount of KPC (1 1/2 -2 cups),
2 Crab Rangoon, 1 Egg Roll
Last time I covered with 11 units Novolog/Novorapid and was a little low at 2 hr. reading 78/4.3--- but I have been trying different levels and I think that too much depends on the level of ingredients within each specific batch to actually get to the point where I can cover Chinese food Exactly

Kung-Pao Chicken
Kung-Pao Pork
Kung-Pao Beef
Yep that will do it my fav three.:D
Like a vegatable dish with it, but better off staying away from the rice. Okay who can stay away from the rice so a quater or third cup no more.

Even if you do the calculations and the fat bolus, etc. and your bg readings are OK for the day, the effects can be longer term. You might actually need to dial up the basal a couple of units that night.

Joslin has teamed up with Harvard to come up with this web site for Chinese-Americans. Check out the Wok, it looks like a good idea even if the number of foods are limited. Sure they will be adding more later. The village also has a resturant, but it's not ready yet so bookmark the site and check back later.
Have Fun (http://aadi.joslin.harvard.edu/aadi/site/index.asp)

That's an idea, Stat. Hopefully I'll remember. I've been recently experimenting w/ upping the N I take at bedtime to cover things like this, but I'm having mixed results.
