Hello All,
My name is Jessica. I am a senior in high school and I have recently been diagnosed a Type 1 Diabetic. I found out I had diabetes on January 24, 2007. I went to the doctor with all of the classic symptoms, described them to him and he did a blood test. I was off the scale for the glucose meter. He told me to go to the hospital immediately. I went in and they immediately admitted me. I later found out that my blood glucose had 805.
The stay wasn't bad, I had nurses checking on me constantly (I was their only patient) and I swear half the town visited me. (I live in a town of 2,000.) And my best friend was with me for hours everyday. I was discharged after about four days in the hospital.
Since I was discharged my blood sugar has stayed between 60 and 120. Within the last week, my numbers have been between 80 and 100. So I think I’m doing ok.
I am finishing my senior year and I am anxious about going to college. Luckily I will have my best friend with me. He's has vowed to keep me eating healthy (and eating. I have been known to forget.)
So I was wondering if there are any college people here that would be willing to give advice. Like how to eat on a budget.
Sincerely,
Jess

Welcome Jessica, you have gotten your numbers down very good, keep up the work. It has been many many years since I went to college, but there is a young person's board here that should be able to help you.
Shoot when it comes to living on budgets I think most of us can give great advice.

Welcome Jess,
The great news is that though it's a good idea, you don't need to eat at regular schedules. You'll eventually expand your knowledge and get into MDI therapy or go on an insulin pump. These regimines are designed to match your insulin intake to your life. We no longer adjust our life to feed our insulin.
You have a lot to learn, but it's not rocket science. Stick around. Lots of good people here to help you along.

Hi Jessica and welcome to the forum! Sounds like your numbers are falling into place and you are having great control so far, keep it up. I was actually diagnosed my freshman year of college and I am now a sophmore and I play tennis for my school team so eating right definitely plays a big role in my life. You are probably both really excited and nervous about college, especially with the stereotype of college students diets. No worries though, the cafe at my school helped me manage my diabetes, I actually met with the head of the food services, which allowed me special access to certain foods and other things like that. Everyone at my school was really understanding, even signing up for classes so I could get in all of my meals became easier. My advice would be to talk to the food management people at your school as well as your advisors and professors, just so they know what you have to do. I wish you the best of luck with the rest of your senior year and if you have any questions at all feel free to ask: )

Sounds like you are doing a great job~ keep it up.
As far as diet goes- I think it would be a good idea for you to meet with a CDE/dietician. He or she could give you some basic guidelines and basics on how to do your meal planning. And that can be very helpful.
Hope we'll be seeing you around :)

Hi Jessica!
Its good to meet you. I'm new to the forum too, but I was diagnosed 16 years ago. Congrats on keeping yourself under such good control. It sounds like you are doing GREAT!
My advice with college is to make sure that you have a good endocrinologist nearby. Add a dietician and a diabetes educator and you should really be set. Find ones that you are comfortable talking to and they should be able to help you with ANY problems/issues/questions you may have. Its their job to make your life healthier and better, so don't be afraid to speak up!
Good luck with college! Diabetes can be a big challenge, but it seems like you have a TON of people who care about you and that is the best support you can get! :D
