View Full Version : Favorite Hypo Food?

When I was diagnosed the standard protocol for lows was a warm orange juice box and those orange peanut butter crackers (which were always stale and smooshed when I needed them). And it gets better... the endo demanded that I carry them around in a fannypack (in my defense it was 1991 and I was 9)

But the first time I had a low at home, I instinctively went and made a bowl of cereal and the idea sort of stuck... This became my #1 hypo treatment from then on. I use bars and gluco tabs when I'm out, but at home its ALWAYS cereal. I don't even like cereal that much..

Does anyone else have a hypo food of choice or am I just weird? :dontknow:

Believe it or not it's the darn peanut butter crackers, but not the orange ones. The toasted ones and have to be Austin Brand. My son is addicted to them. lol

If I'm extremely low (as in low and feeling low) then I'll treat with some sort of juice drink. OJ is my drink of choice.

If it's a slow low, then I might just cut my basal back on my pump. That's a nice feature of pumping. If I can't do that, then I'll just eat some of whatever is around.

Generally I use glucose tabs....but my *favourite* way to treat a low is with honey. Honey on anything.....toast, crackers, rice cakes.....a spoon....my finger....you name it.

Mine is definitely peanut butter toast. I have always had a love for peanut butter, but since the begining I have always treated a low in the night/near bedtime with it, and now whenever I am low I crave it like crazy, my body knows that's what I use to fuel it. It's a great indicator... as soon as the cravings come on I'll test.

I hear ya on the fannypack! My son has made it very clear he will stuff his pockets to the breaking point, but the fannypack is a fate worse than death and will never be seen on his body.

I used to eat anything and everything in sight too! But I rebounded horribly! Today I woke up at 78 and was feeling hypo so I made some instant breakfast/milk and will skip my symlin this morning.

oh I love peanut mm's or a coke or both depends on the low, mostly a half a can of coke does just fine, but there are those times where it is low that I need to eat so peanut mm's are my choice, I just can't be a good diabetic on treating a low, but I learned how much to use so I don't make myself all high either.....yay go me

Her other eye is missing now too, so she probably can't do as much damage anymore.

M&Ms are definitely my favourite, but I'll eat whatever is around. Trouble is, some days when I'm low I don't want to eat anything... but most of the time I just want chocolate, sandwiches, crackers, fizzy drinks... it's hard work to stop myself eating everything in the house!

When I go low, I'm terrible. I eat anything and everything in sight, and lots of it. It's awful. But lately, I've really been trying to be good and just drink Orange juice.

Drinking PURE maple syrup from the Laurentians in PQ. I've got cans of them. That's my fav.

The most common however is a glucose tab.

Camjen, I have those moments too! I just have to be careful that I don't get overzealous and end up at 300 an hour later. It's happened though... MANY times.

Cyborg, LOL. The avatar is from Kill Bill. Best. Movie. Ever.

DEFINITELY melty!!! Mmmmm. I usually have it along with a small apple juice (it has to be SUPER cold).... but I think the Welch's grape would be fantastic, I'll have to go buy some, just in case!

I don't really have a favorite yet, seeing as I've been at this a month, but I really like Smarties. They're easy to carry around and fast acting.

Skittles work really fast for me, but I rarely keep 'em around. I ususally grab a low-fat, chocolate chip granola bar. I try not to over indulge a low, but sometimes it is really hard...yesterday I ate a whole bag of chips!!

i like skittles or chocolate- depends how low i am to have chocolate, if it's not too bad a low then it's quick enough. i then usually have a slice of toast.

when i have been in hospital hypostop and toast with jam seems to be the standard hypo fix,

This is a fannypack!

Mine was bright shiny purple and my mom wrote DIABETIC and my name and phone number on it in HUGE letters. Which was smart of her, in retrospect. But I was so traumatized by it I wouldn't even carry a purse until about 10 years later! :D
