Hello everybody! I am so happy I found this place! I don't know how many times I have tried to find a forum or community to talk to other people with D. Never successfully... my serching skills obviously need some work!

Anyway, I have been diabetic for 10 years now. I was 12 when diagnosed, not the best time of my life. The doctor didn't catch it very quickly. I was in and out to see the same doc for about 2 months, and she kept telling me different diagnosis... Strep throut... thrush from the strep meds... etc. Meanwhile I am dying of thirst all the time and consuming a LOT of sugary drinks.. and when I wasn't drinking or going to the bathroom I was sleeping. Finally when she realized, the last time I went to see her, had lost about 20 lbs. she started crying, so mad at herself she hadn't clued in sooner. I was sent straight to the hospital, and was admitted immediatly. What happened in the hospital I don't remember, I was pretty out of it. My initial BG was 49.7mmol/L .... I think that translates to 895 or so. Not good. I was there for 2 weeks before everything got straightened out. Was part of a research study on the age of developing diabetes (3 & 12 being the most common). Never heard anything of the outcome though.

I had a pretty good begining once I was released. I was super sensitive to insulin and only on 2 shots of fast acting a day for the first 5 years. In the 'honeymoon' period. I wish those days had never ended. But of corse they did, and I slowly had to take more and more insulin to compensate for what I was eating. I'm now taking 6 shots a day. Thinking hard about getting a pump, just not sure if I'm ready to give up the routine I've come so custom to.

I think that's about it! I'm learning so much from everyone here already. It's so nice to hear of other peoples challenges and triumps. Look forward to getting to know you all!:D

Hi Rocky & welcome to the family! Yikes on the 49.7 bg and on the doctor's misdiagnosis!!

Interesting that you underwent a study...I was on a study where they checked to see if Diabetes affected cognitive functions (I remember putting puzzles together & doing memory type games). If memory serves, unless sugars were out of range (low or high - which makes sense), nothing was affected. It's been so long ago now though, that I can't remember....that may be my cognitive function going on me, lol. ;)

If you have questions on the pump, feel free to ask. There are many pumpers on this forum who would be glad to help.

Just wanted to say, glad you found us & always feel free to ask questions. We'll do whatever we can to assist, or at least get you pointed in the right direction... :shakehand

Hi Rocky, you're in the right place for some guidance and support. Great place, good people!
Dewey, I am so interested in how your sugars affected your cognitive functions. Can you tell me more please.

Welcome Rocky !!

"I'm not sure I want to give up the routine"

It would be my guess, and I'm certain many others here, that giving up that routine and starting a new routine would give You tremendous freedom.

The majority of people with pumps wouldn't give them up !!!

Hi Rocky,
Welcome to the Forum. As you can see already there are people from Canada on this forum and you've met some already. I have a pump for 3 years and there is no way I would not use it. Your control will be easier to achieve, but it may require a little work from you. I love my pump and I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't like having theirs. Sorry, I think there was one on this forum who didn't like it and stopped using it. Generally it will make life easier for you though.

:wavey: Hey Rocky!
I'm new to the forum too, doing 5-6 shots a day (going on the pump any day now), 25 years old, diagnosed at 9, dr. took forever to diagnose me and I was over 800 when hospitalized, so... we have just a lil bit in common, eh?!
Anyway, welcome!!!

Unrelated, but I noticed europeans/canadians use double digits to represent bgs. Does anyone know what conversion is to mg/dL? Just curious...

Hi Rocky
I'm from BC..which part of Canada are you in?
ss

I am from Alberta but spend a heck of a lot of my time in BC! I love it there, so untouched in many areas! =) I just came back from there last week and am going again in April (for the Ski and Snowboard festival in Whistler) and again in June (to surf in Tofino and just camp along the coast on the island). Where in BC are you from?

MARay237 - How well do pumps do in water? That's my major concern as I am in water a lot in the summer, and less often but still quite frequently in the winter. I would LOVE to not have to take 6 shots a day... the more I read about pumps on here I am getting more convinced that it is the way to go. I could use the renewed freedom.

ClaireZk - Well it appears we DO have quite a bit in common! =) and for your unrelated question... I read somewhere on here that it is as easy as multiplying by 18 to get the conversion from mmol/L to mg/dL, and dividing by 18 to go the other way.

Thank you EVERYONE for the warm welcomes! I like it here already! :D
