i went to see my doctor yesterday. it was time to check on my weekly numbers see if my meds were right. now i am a bit confused and a bit worried, and wondering if anyone might know the answer to a couple questions. ok a bit of back ground to make the questions make sence. i am type 2, on metformin 500 2x a day, humalog 4 units at each meal, humalog N varies in units.
1) i started on the insulin 6 months ago, since i have started on it my a1c has has been rising, and my numbers are higher all except the morning from a 6.2 to a 6.9 yesterday. i am wondering if thats normal?
2) they have me stopping my metformin because my protine is at 928.4 mmol in my urine < i have kidney troubles not related to diabeties> i am wondering if anyone knows what that number means and why it would stop the metformin?
3) they have me increasing my humalog N 1 unit each night until i wake up at in the 5 or 6's. but i went from 4 and i am now up to 12 and i still wake up always at 8.2 to 8.9. anyone have an idea of why that wouldnt be dropping with the added insulin?
and last question <for now..lol>
4) they still want me taking 4 units at meal times but now if my number is above 8 before meals they want me to add a unit of insulin for each number above 8 then the 4 i am needing to average my meals. i am worried about going low if i do this. i am wondering if other type 2's do this and why and what to watch for if i go low?
sorry for all the questions i hope someone can answer for me i am getting so confused with all this, and am starting to wonder if i wasnt better off with out taking the meds when it seems to be making it all worse. 6 months ago my highest number after a meal was 9 now i am lucky if i am below 15, i hate seeing the numbers like this. thanks for your time

1) no this doesnt sound normal, you may need more insulin ( and could possibly be type 1, not type 2)
2)metformin can cause liver and kidney problems... lactic acidosis

Im not on insulin, but how did they determine you was type 2?? and i dont know the anwer to your last two questions.. someone else maybe able to answer

hi thank you for answering.
thank you for the information on the metformin. i looked up lactic acidosis and although i dont really understand what it is or if its what my problem is- it is nice to get an answer on it. Unfortunatly i have 5 doctors all taking carfe of different things and they all only seem to be giving part of the info at a time so i have to piece it together..lol
for your question. i was told almost a year ago i was pre-diabetic. my a1c was only 6.3 and no one seemed over concerned about it. 3 months later after doing the blood checks with and after meals it was found that my numbers before meals were good but after meals were a bit high 8's and sometimes 9's. at this time they started me on the metformin and ran a bunch of blood and urine tests. at this point i was seeing my family dr every week because of this and my other issues and they watched my numbers very quickly go from ok to a bit high to quite high. so at 6 months my dr put me on insulin. i have now been on insulin for just under 6 months and my numbers are rising and rising. the a1c and a glucose tolerance test were both done and both high the a1c at 6.9 and the glucose tolerance was at 14. so my dr sent me to a surgen cause he figured i had pancreatis <sorry if the spellings wrong its early..lol> the surgen said no and came up with another list of things wrong with me..lol. that is when they ruled out being type 1.
sorry for rambling i am just getting so frustrated. i want to get under control but it seems the more i do to get things better the more that goes wrong or gets worse.

Hi Cuori, Hang in there, Diabetes is difficult to understand, & is very individualized.
I'm on Metformin too, so far I don't have any kidneys problems.
I don't have answers to your questions, but keep reading the forums & learn from others.

Let me ask you, Have you reduced your carbs? how many carbs do you eat per meal?
Have you included exercise in your daily activities? it helps.
Keep testing several times a day
& check your feet daily, for loss of sensation.
