View Full Version : Neuropathy feels worse after getting GL controlled?

My average GL was around 300 and I felt fine. I didn't know I had Diabetes.

I get diagnosed, start medicine, eat better, and quickly get my GLs down to normal. I thought "Phew, good thing this was caught before anything serious happened."

A month or so later I start feeling that tingling/burning sensation in both my legs, just above the knee and a little toward the outside (lateral) of my thighs. Also there is a spot on one of my hands that feels likes this as well.

My legs and arms now go numb alot when I'm trying to sleep. Poor circulation I am guessing.

Why am I feeling this NOW when I am under control? Are the nerves waking back up after a several-year onslaught of high gls? Is that a good sign? Or did I get this as a result of having poor circulation from a lower GL and lower blood pressure?

Gretchen Becker mentions very very briefly in her "First Year" book that it may get worse before it gets better. But I felt nothing. I felt fine.

Is this common? I've been googling myself silly looking for an article or and answer and haven't found anything that mentions this.

Any help? Advice? Shared experiences? Would be most welcome.

I had neuropathy in my feet, would get into doctor's face regarding, they ran tests but said not diabetes!! I would be in tears some nights from the pain. When my blood sugars started getting into control, once the doctors said woops yes you do have diabetes (had to go blind almost) my feet started to get better. The tingling is still there, but not as intense, but I did notice if I have a high reading in the evening, my feet do act up. I have heard it does get better unless there is too much damage, but do have your doctor check this out..

I didn't really start to notice the burning/tingling in my feet until my BG got under control. It used to happen occassionally before that, but was happening pretty much every night after I started on medication.

It's been getting somewhat better. Some nights I don't notice it at all. I started meds last Oct so it's only been a little over 4 months.

I've seen a few things that suggest that the worsening might be from some nerve endings finally "coming back to life", but I haven't been able to find anything scientific on it.

I'm just hoping it continues to improve. I had a massage the other day and about jumped off the table when they got to my feet, because they were so ticklish, so I'm taking that as a good sign.

Hi Vince, my experience is much like yours. Had no neuropathy symptoms until after getting BG levels under control for a couple of weeks. Then all of a sudden there was the burning feet and ankles, and even worse, these phantom objects in my shoes. Feels like there is something in my shoe, like a heavy sock seam under my big toe for example, but there is nothing there. I have read that when nerve damage from neuropathy begins to reverse, it can actually feel worse for awhile.
