Whenever you see blood you have to do that for three reasons....
1) WHen you infuse it may hurt like a bi***. It will hurt way worse than the animas sting, try about 100 times worse. BUt this doesn't always occur.
2) The bolus may not work at all. I've yet to figure out why this occurs since it seems like it would work faster going straight into the bloodstream, but sometimes it just won't work.
3) The bolus may work too fast. This is what you expect to happen going into blood. The insulin won't have the fatty tissue slowing the absortion down so it may drop you faster than a nuclear bomb.
So unfortunately you just have to remove it and insert a new one.

Yep - replace it. And have some gauze or tissue handy in case it is a gusher.

I agree, I wouldn't risk leaving it in... You're better off changing it out.

i took it out and it was all green and bluish and yucky. it didnt squirt. my numbers were perfect though, even though the canulla had blood in it.
i have dumped neosporin on it every day but its not really getting much better...

Are you using IV Prep or some other antiseptic before insertion?

I use IV Prep and I'll put my new set in before taking the old one out. Then I reuse the IV Prep pad on the old site. It seems to help close the wound and cleanse it also...

Doesn't that sting? Maybe I should try that and that would make mine heal faster.

It doesn't sting using IV Prep. Not sure about the other antiseptic pads. The sticky coating that dries is almost like a liquid band-aid.
Soo...old thread but I am having the same problem. The past 3 sets I've had blood in the cannula and I'm wondering why this is!!!!??? If it happens once in a while that's fine right? but this is the 3rd time it's happened in a row I think and why!!! It's like that right now and I need to go change it but my numbers are totally fine. It's kind of scarying me. What's going on.
And also, this is a random question but, when you pick the are going to put the site on do you clean it with something and then with the IV prep? or just the IV prep? I just do the latter, is that ok?

Last week I had this happen lots of blood... and that was the reason lo and behold why i had been having 300 plus sugars- no insulin getting through. Put in another set and was fine.
