Spring is here and then summer ... the best seasons for fruit! and my first "fruit" season as a diabetic...
Does anyone eat fruit? What should I avoid? What can I have?
I love plums, nectarines, grapes, watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries...

I've found I can eat blueberries and strawberries with minimal impact on bg.

We all seem to react differently to different fruits. I can eat most berries with no problem, and I even think they may help reduce my levels. I can eat bananas with just a slight rise, if I do not eat any other carbs with it. Apples, pears, grapes, oranges cause a quick spike that seems to take a long time and lots of Novolog to get rid of. Some times it is worth risking the spike, as I feel I need the fruit in my diet.

I have some sort of berry (blueberry, blackberry or strawberry) or 1/2 of a banana on my carefully-measured allotment of cereal every morning. After that, eating fruit gets a little more complicated for me.
Tangerines, I find, are not a problem -- they're small, and citrus in general does not have as much an effect on my BGs as other fruits that I love, such as mangoes (yikes), apples, pears, pineapple, watermelon (yum, but still kind of yikes), etc.
I've got the breakfast routine down pat, so I don't need to check so compulsively after eating in the morning anymore (it took a while to get there). But I still check when I eat other fruits at other times of the day. I would suggest that as you incorporate fruit into your diet, check your glucose levels religiously, keep a record, and eventually you'll figure out which fruits you can eat, or rather, the quantity of different kinds of fruit that you can have and still stay on target.

Fruit and I do not get along very well! LOL I do have a little bit every once in a while tho. Now that I'm on insulin, that may be easier for me to deal with tho!! Haven't tried it yet. We'll see! ;)

I eat plenty of fruit. Apples, bananas, plums, strawberrys, blackberrys, raspberrys and (my favorite) red seedless grapes!
The only one that really effects me are the red seedless grapes, any more than just over a handfull and my BG start to raise (mainly because I like them so much I eat the lot instead of just a handfull)... ;)

I eat most kinds of fruit. They are important for
Diabetics also. Grapes, watermelons, honeydews
(sorry Dew, not you ;) ) and bananas raise my
sugars the most but I take insulin to counteract it.
The rest don't bother me much.

I can pretty much eat all fruits, just watch the quantity...watermellon is high glycemic but I don't really care for watermellon so I don't eat it. I use to sit and eat the whole cantelope at one time but now I eat about a 1/4 of it and not too much problems

I'm like ladytaz, my blood sugars do not get along with most fruits.........and I LOVE fruits!
I can eat 1/2 an apple, pear or nectarine, a handful of blueberries and that's about it! All other fruits raise my blood sugar, so I do my best to stay away from them.

I was never a big fruit eater before my diagnosis, so I don't eat that much now either (habit, I guess). I have found that if I eat more than 7-8 grapes, my levels will raise. I have eaten cantaloupe, berries, green apples and pears without any noticeable effect on the levels, though I don't have fruit regularly.
As the previous poster mentioned, checking your levels 2 hrs after eating your fruit will give you information on what affects you the most.
I definitely can't drink ANY fruit juices without high levels though. Guess we need the fiber to slow the digestion and spikes.

I eat a TON of veggies now, but am skittish about the fruit. I've 'hidden' some fruits in my meals, like adding a mashed banana to my batch of Wheatina, but I'm kinda scared to add a fruit to my lunch or dinner.
What exactly are the benefits of fruits versus vegetables? My wife has tried to exoplain that they help the body produce insulin, is this true?

I used to limit fruits to no more than 3 a day and would choose carefully the ones I'd have.
Now I don't do that anymore. All fruits have vitamins and minerals I need. Of course some will raise my BG a lot more than others but I try not to have too much (watermelon on a hot summer day wow!) and I try to remain active after having them. One day I kinda over did it with grapes and... was 8.9 mmol/L when I tested but was right back to 5.1 mmol/L 45 minutes later. I tend to go high with certain fruits but oddly enough I go down quickly after.
I do not drink any juice though.

I eat 3 fruits a day with no problem. I mainly stick to the berries, sometimes an apple or banana, and yeah I'll even have a bit of watermelon in the summer. I also like tangerines, those are yummie.
I think fruit is like anything else, when eaten in moderation it's not a problem for me.

thank you everyone for all your advice... i will start with one fruit at a time and see how my levels go...

I avoid fruit mostly - just eat heaps of vegetables.
However, I can eat any fruits (as long as I don't eat too much) since I have insulin... but things like bananas are a bit too evil and spike me big time. I can easily get away with an apple - not much carb and high on the fiber. A small chunk of pineapple, heaps of strawberries... so long as I know the carbs involved I'll eat what I want, but I still like to avoid the high GI stuff coz my insulin can't keep up with it.
