Can I chew sugarfree gum while I'm doing a basal test?

As long as it doesn't have any sort of calories, sounds fine to me. Or any sort of stimulant which may provoke your body into releasing from the glycogen stores.

Sweet! Gum is allowed? Now I'm gonna try. Can I eat a hoho when doing my basal test?

In theory, nope. Nothing.
In reality, I chew gum to help with the hunger, and I drink decaf coffee.

Hmm....
12:00 122
12:30 124
1:00 115
1:30 113
1:45 - eat 1 piece of sugarfree gum
2:00 - 135
Very interesting. Especially b/c I have very little concern that I'm not on ENOUGH basal. If anything I think I may be on too much b/c I still drop a lot between meals.
Not so sure the gum was a good idea. Spitting it out now, but the damage may be done already.

I'm pretty sure you have to raise 30 or more from the inital to be consider raising the basal, so 122 to 135 is negligable.

Oh yeah? OK, thanks. That's good to know. Makes me feel a bit better.
Now I'm kinda sad I spit out the gum. It was fooling me into thinking I was eating. ;)

Extra gum has like 1 gram of carb per piece I think..... I wouldn't worry about it!

Depending on the gum, even sugarfree, it'll still probably raise your blood sugar a bit.
There's something called the cephalic insulin response in type-II diabetics, not sure if it's present in type-I, but basically your body senses something sweet and blood sugar raises a bit. It's seen with artificial sweeteners.

I think this is what happened to me.

What I don't understand is why this "early preabsorptive insulin response to meal ingestion" would cause BG to go up.

For the same exact reason as the chinese food resteraunt effect - the preperation of controlling sugar in normal people. If these 2 processes are real.
