The ultimate insulin pump

Hi,

I am an engineering student doing my master thesis on Diabetes equipment, and I hope that I can use your expertise in getting some valuable information.

I have been looking at the pumps that are available today, and find that most of them could easily be more user friendly and better designed.

So here is my question: Using the technology available today (that means no closed loop and no implants), what does the ultimate pump look like? Is it a patch pump? does it have CGMS? What does the user interface look like? Etc.

I already have some ideas, but I'm sure your experience with the pumps have given you some even better! This is an open discussion. so please post an idea, no matter how small and silly.

I'd like to see a pump that supports multiple, simultaneous combo boluses.

Obviously cost is always a factor. They are expensive and supplies are also expensive. That aside Iwish I could have a pump tha tI could set up the menus. There are a couple of menus that I would like to have come up with one button pressed. I'm sure this is a simple software upgrade and could be done. I don't want to have to page through a couple of screens to get where I need to be. An insulin on board should be able to be seen with ease also on the menus. Integrated CGMS is a nice featurs to have and is on the MM but should be able to use other CGMS systems.

A large relatively easy to address shortfall of current pumps is the reporting software - the only decent software I have seen was co pilot and it was recalled. The modern pumps like the cozmo collect a TON of information that could be used but isnt.

Some stuff Id love to see from reports - since some of it has nothing to do with quality of care and A1c it will never happen but I can dream

Site average life
Battery average life
Insulin wasted - both on filling tubing and on pulling cartridge before its empty
Day of week ranges
meal times - Cozmo pump knows EXACTLY when I eat yet the reports make me put in a standard meal time interval
GuEstimated a1c
basal adjustment suggestions based on patterns
Carb ratio adjustment based on patterns
Standard of care based reports for for Endo visits - the Dr asks a standard set of questions make it easy to print the details he wants
Seasonal trends - does BG trend up or down by time of year ...

Todays computers have MASSIVE computing power to be able to take advantage of the data some of the pumps already have. Its a ****ed shame that the pump companies spend little or no time on this ...

As far as the pump goes it would be great if it were smaller, if it were possible to infuse the insulin differently so that action time was quicker, Obviously a CGMS system would be great

the insulin pump works great.... but it seems many diabetics on the pump seem to have the same problem as i do.... after wearing a new canula the reservoir gets air in it and that air bubbles go into the tubing and those little bubbles can cause an increase in bg.... any suggestions on how to avoid the air bubbles.... thanks... i have tried every thing... room temperature insulin... wearing the pump different ways.....help

I would love to see a pump that is small! I would give anything to have a pump that is the size of a pedometer. The biggest issue I have is wearing certain clothes with the pump I have now. I know this is more of a "female" issue, but it can be a big one. Dresses are impossible and tight pants can be tough if you would prefer to have a sleeker look without your pump showing.

Features for me would be cgm that worked perfectly without finger sticks that are additional. I would love to have moveable canulas. If I needed to change the site because of pain or outfit change, how cool would it be to just move your site?

I would like my pump to be able to use a different correction rate depending on my bg reading. Most of the time my correction factor is right on, but on those occasions when I am unusually high I frequently have to do the correctin bolus and then"lie" and tell my pump I am going to eat some carbs to get the extra units I need. I don't want to change my regualr correction factor becasue then I would go low - it usually wokr great.

This is a list of upgrades I'd like to see on the Cozmo. I know some pumps already have these:

I'd like a remote control.

Ability to program a touch bolus by units and a standard bolus by carbs, or vice versa, or use the same for each. User choice.

Variable alarms- like, use vibrate when a bolus completes, Loud volume when an occlussion is detected, etc. Plus, the option to disable some alarms. Also, time frames for alarms, ie, give me an alarm after a high, but not if it's between midnight and 9 am.

Smaller basal rates

Complex temp basals- ie, Start with 50% for 2 hours, then use 10% for 3 hours

Super bolus option

And like Doug said, much better computer reports.

The Animas won't yet do it for you like the up and coming Cozmo, but it does let you modify the ISF before giving a bolus so you don't have to put in false carb intake.

Thanks so much for all the information. It will be taken into consideration, if I choose to do a pump. And even if I don't, it has given me some good insight into what it is you want from your equipment.

Since some of us do find protein affects our bg, it would be nice to have the ability to tell the pump the carb and protein intake for a meal and have the appropriate bolus delivered based on users settings.
