hi there
i was wondering if anyone is taking humalog N. i have been increasing it by one unit each night like i was told by my dr. he wants it increase by 1 until i wake up between 5 or 6. i went from 4 units to 12 units each night and my wake up numbers were always in the 8's. from 12 -15 units my morning numbers went up to 9. now i am at 17 units at bed time and i woke up this morning at 10. i asked my dr about this he just said that 17 units is a small dose so to keep adding more until i wake up at 5 or 6.
is anyone else doing this?? it seems weird to me to keep taking more if my numbers are rising. i have tried adding a snack at bed time for dawn phenom. but hasnt helped.

I took NPH for years and it was a problem for me. Taking more insulin should not increase your numbers so this is just plain odd. I thought about your question for awhile and the only thing that I could figure was either the insulin is old and your numbers are increasing because it is losing potency or DP.

If I were you, I would open a new bottle of insulin. See if that helps, but be careful about how much you take. Your 17u may drop you dangerously low. Try eating a protein night snack. If your insulin is dropping your sugar very low at night and your liver is over compensating your numbers would be high. Protein is the best snack for DP. Have crackers and peanut butter or cheese.

Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!
