**I also posted this in the prediabetes forum, but decided to post it here as well because it also deals with type 2 and this forum seems to get more action. Sorry for the redundancy**

Hello everyone. Hoping for some insight. Before you answer, please know that I'm going to the Doctor in a week for the official tests, so those will be done soon...

My story is that I',m a 27 year old who is 50 lbs overweight. I've been overweight for about 7 years. In the last two weeks I've experienced some symptoms that are likely related to diabetes like dry mouth, sweet-smelling urine, and for the last couple days, increased urination.

I bought a home glucose meter a couple days ago. My fasting glucose levels have been 112, 115, and 113.

The test results could be off a bit since they are from a home monitor, but they indicate prediabetes and not diabetes right?

Also, is the fact that I seem to be experiencing symptoms of diabetes mean that I have progressed beyond prediabetes and that it's "too late" for me?

Please let me know what you think!

well just from those fasting numbers your in the prediabetic category, but that doesnt always mean that your not really a diabetic IMO

you might wanna try checking your levels before and after a couple meals during this week to see, you would want to take these readings to your doctors office as well, cause they will benefit the doctor.

they determine diabetes different ways

lets say your at 125 before your meal, and 2 hours after your meal your over 200, example 236

you skip a day

do this again with a different meal different time of day, and your 115 then 2 hours later your 250

i would say you have full blown diabetes

any 2 random readings over 200 as seperate intervels
or any 2 fastings over 126 several weeks apart
also
if your a1c's are ever over 5.9 they might consider you a diabetic etc etc..

tons of way to see if your in the early stages of diabetes.

but of course your doctor will determine this

Thanks sweetcheeks! I was feeling pretty down, when I felt the symptoms, but then cheered up when my readings werent over 126, even if they were just from a home monitor?

What do the symtoms mean though? Do they signal that it's too late to prevent diabetes?

if its the diabetes that causing those symptons, then your probably are full blown diabetic, i was having those problems when i was diagnosed, however something else maybe causing it, not nessecarily diabetes.

from my opinion about prediabetes, they dont have symptons or than their sugar occasionally go up and down depending on what they eat, usually if you can catch it in the prediabetic category, you cant prevent it, but you can prolong it, if you change now
but eventually you will get it maybe a 1 year, maybe 20 lol

Hi Chariot: Welcome to the forum.

Not going to hazard a guess as to your diabetic standing at this point. Your first order of business should be finding out a definitive diagnosis. You should have an A1C drawn at your doctors appt. This will give a 90 day average of your blood sugar, which would be much more useful than just meter readings alone.

If you are a full-blown diabetic, then testing is the key to good control. If you test regularly, esp. 2 hrs after the start of your meals, you will be able to see the effects certain foods have on your blood sugar levels and know what foods to avoid and what you can eat without problems.
Exercise is also very important in good control.

If you are pre-diabetic, then you will hopefully be able to turn things around and avoid diabetes for many, many years with healthy lifestyle changes.

If you find you are diabetic, you'll find lots of very useful information on this forum.

Let us know how your appt goes.

Linda:)
