When you guys are deemed Type 1 in catagories here, does that mean that most of you were Juvenile Diabetics? Just curious since I am type 1, but have only been diagnosed at age 28. I wasn't sure if I should deem myself Type 1.5 or not if most Type1's here are Juvenile.

'Juvenile' isn't a term that's really used anymore. It's how people used to refer to T1, because T1 tends to be manifest itself in juveniles rather than adults.

Basically, all the old ways of determining which type of diabetes you have are wrong. They're predicated on either age or treatment - neither of which are an indicator of your condition.

If you don't produce any insulin at all because of an autoimmune reaction that destroyed your islet cells, then you're a T1, regardless of age of diagnosis. If you do produce insulin but you aren't able to use it, or you just don't produce enough insulin, then you're a T2, regardless of age of diagnosis.

Generally T1 manifests itself before age 14 and and T2 after age 40, which is why T1 used to be called juvenile-onset and T2 mature-onset. But these aren't set in stone.

If you don't produce any insulin because you've had an autoimmune reaction that's killed off your islet cells, you're a T1.

What I meant was most Type1's here have had "D" since childhood?

I understand the type 1 vs 2 entirely, but just wanted to know if most here were diagnosed as children.

Most of us have, Like myself at 13 years. ;)

Yes indeed. :)

Well, then, I just gotta be different... Diagnosed as type 1 with insulin resistance about 3 weeks ago, at the age of 36.

So that blows the juvenile statement then. So your diagnoisis just proves that you can enherit diabetes type 1 at any age!!
That said there is no such thing as type 1.5!! ;)

Yes there is, it's also known as Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) and is distinct from both T1 and T2, although it is similar to T1. The primary difference is the speed of development - T1 develops very quickly (within a few months), whereas T1.5 can take years.

Incidentally, I was dxed with T1 at 14.

Type one (autoimmune disorder) diagnosed at 32 years old. I have had type one for 20 years and my diagnosis has never changed. I have been on insulin from day one.

So the treatment is different to type 1 ? :questionm

I was 26, and although I never had any antibody tests done, it was definitely type 1 rather than LADA because I was symptomatic for about 3 weeks before diagnosis, and then had no noticeable honeymoon afterward. What I don't get is why kids can't get LADA.

LADAs can get by without insulin for a bit, or with very little insulin.

I was diagnosed at 19. So not super adult, not a kid either.

I was diagnosed at 8. Incidentally, I saw a new-to-me primary care Dr. for the first time yesterday (I'd guess somewhere in his 50's, age-wise) who said to me 'we affectionately call you guys juvenile...' meaning T1 :T

I'm a T1.5, diagnosed age 29. It basically is type 1, it's just a little slower to come on seriously, and to start with looks more like T2 in a lot of people.

I had at least a year or two of vague symptoms, then about a month when the symptoms became really obvious and I was diagnosed. From then on it took a year for anyone to realise I wasn't a type 2.

I suppose that year of diet, exercise & pills was my honeymoon, though no one knew it at the time.

For most purposes, T1.5s are just considered T1s. It is different, but for the sake of filling in forms etc I'm a T1. Also when explaining to other people I generally just say I'm type 1. Most people don't even know the diff between T1 & 2 so I'm in no hurry to confuse them any more!

But probably should have been diagnosed a little earlier. ;)

I was also diagnosed at age 20. But that was 30 years ago. And they didn't know how to classify me - "juvenile onset" or "maturity onset". So I was put on Glucophage and Diabenese and told to reduce carbs for a few months. But when I didn't respond, they decided that I in fact had Juvenile Onset Diabetes and put me on insulin. The Type 1/Type 2 nomenclature came later (early 80s?) and superceded the Juvenile Onset/Maturity Onset Diabetes distinction.

I am type 1 and I was just diagnosed about 8 months ago, at age 29. I am likely still "honeymooning" since I am very insulin sensitive. But I have the gad antibodies, so I am definitely type 1.

Diagnosed Type 1 at age 33. No-one believes me when I tell them I've only had diabetes for a year. The 'juvenile' thinking around T1 is still v. strong. In fact, my sister had a fight with a Dr who said I couldn't possibly be T1 as you have to be under 18. When she told him I had GAD antibodies and have been on insulin since diagnosis he shut up.... so even our medical professionals are not up to speed on things....

My younger brother was dx'd 19 years ago at the age of 21. I was dx'd a type 1 at the age of 40, but know now that I went years before being dx'd. A year of total stress & losing my sister is what finally brought it out in me.

I have a stong family history of Type 1. My grandmother (father's mom) was a type 1, along with her two brothers.

Lada (1.5) diagnosed at 53 but had symptoms for 3 years before.
Like Emm, I'm begining to just say type 1 as most people don't know what it is. I normally say that its the type that most people get as children but I was a rather late developer.

I'll tell you why most likely they have a new category now, It is because the medical society doesn't ever want to admit any mistakes in their assumptions of a disease. Much and easier better to just invent another type.
Cynically yours,

I was dxd. with Juvenile Diabetes at age 3.
They also called it Sugar Diabetes. Which
made no sense to me when I was Little since
I wasn't allowed sugar. :P

My Endo's have always referred to me as a Juvenile
Diabetic not a Type 1. That includes my Endo now.
I am a Type 1 but I guess he thinks of me as the
original Type 1(Juvenile). Like WW1 Vets, I guess.
Again the originals. :hmmmm: All of a sudden, I feel
old. ;) I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Juvenile crept from highest age 18, through to age 30
( already turned to Type 1 at this age), now the oldest
Type 1 is what 56?

The same for Type 2(Adult Onset). It used to start
around age 40 now it starts at age 6.

It still seems to me that Type 1 and 2 have morphed(?)
somehow into Type 1.5 which never existed before. Or
is it possible the medical world were too blind to see it(no pun intended).

I was 19.

It would be interesting if we could calculate the average dx age for each type, or the most prevalent one, at least for this forum.

I was 28 when diagnosed with "insulin resistance" -- on insulin within 3 weeks. Next doctor decided t1, so I changed to one who said t2. He moved out of state -- next dr said t1, so I changed to one who said t2, then HE moved out of state! No t1.5 in those days, but I'm guessing that's what it was with a lllooonnnggg honeymoon period! (Or is that a lllooonnnggg DENIAL period???) Latest dr ran some tests to prove to me I was a t1, which I guess is the best thing that could have happened to me because now I really MANAGE my diabetes (or TRY to, anyway!)

It's a shame that we expect a lot from our medical staff and the fact that they are allways lerning the desiese. As for myself to understand to realise to see that there are type 1's in the late 20 year olds bieing diagosed late in life. And that's just scraching the serface of this desiese. God knows what we have to put up with to certail the effects of this desiese. :(
