Hi, :)

I got my A1C results. It was 7.1. I know on my diabetes paper, it says not supposed to be above 7. It was 7.2 on the last one and 6.8 when diagnosed.

I have been trying so hard to get it down and know the last couple weeks my readings have been better. Hoping the next one will be lots lower.

Is it bad for it to be 7.1? My doc said to just stay on diet and exercise, so is what I am trying to do. I don't think I am doing good enough though. What do you all think?

7.1 is considered average. It means that your average BG is around 175. 6 and below is considered non diabetec with 5 being equal to an average BG of 100.

The lower you can get the A1c, the less chance you have of getting diabetes complications.

If you could get it down to 6.1, you would be lowering your chances of complications by 40%

If I had to make a description, I would call 7.1 average.

I will try and get it down more, but I got scared of the lows and being shaky. I hate that sweaty, shaky, heart pounding stuff, but since getting the readings lower than they were, I can now stand 120 without shaking. I was so happy about that.

Yesterday at my docs while waiting for my son get done with his appt, I had numb lips again, and I checked and it was only 132. I took a couple sips of orange juice and then was okay.

This stuff is so hard to know what to do and when to do it.

I appreciate the responses.

it has been a year or two since my last a1c but your doing better than i was then mine was 10. something before that it was 14 something. i am doing alot better now. i decided to stop listening to the doctors and look at it from a logical point of view. when i was first diagnosed my blood sugar was well over 500 i dont know how high it was becaus the test they used didnt go that high. they put me on pills and insulin, 2 months later and the addition of 80 lbs i started looking at alternitive ways. the docotr said i had type 2 diabetes and that if i lost enough weight i might get rid of the diabetes. i found this annoying since in just two months i was at an 80 lb deficit. anyway fast forward 3 years of fighting insulin and pills and weight loss and i managed to be right about where i started (at plus 80lbs) i weighed 350lbs and i knew after seeing so many people die from it and almost all of them still taking their medication i had to do something. so first 6things first i put down the fork, then meat and green veggies. and this is not a suggestion cause if your stupid it can kill you. i out down the pills and the insulin. its been two months ive lost 70 lbs my sugars very rarely go above 130. i figured it was too hard to take the medicine and lose weight and i was right, but you have to have the will power to not go nuts every once and a while and eat stuff you shouldnt. my body at least seemed to adapt to my sugar levels being at 500 i didnt feel bad i just hat to go to the bathroom every 15 minutes.now when i go above 120 i feel every bit of it

Hi, were you recently diagnosed? I had numb lips when I was first diagnosed with type 1. Also, you should know that your meter can be off by 20%, plus or minus. So that 132 reading might actually be 105, or 158 (which I doubt is the case). You should keep track at what hours of the day, what time you take your meds, and after how many hours pass after eating, that you experience these sensations (lows). I bet you will find a pattern. Write it down for a few days, consistantly, and I am sure you will find a pattern form after so many hours after eating, taking the meds or excercising etc..

Good luck

Hi, :)

Lansing, you have done really well on your weight loss. That's fantastic. I don't know if I have that kind of willpower.

McNeely,

I had cancer surgery on Dec. 2002 and when my Oncologist came in to check on me that evening after surgery, I heard the nurse say my sugar was 190. He said that I didn't say anything about being diabetic and said if it went over 200 to call him. I thought uh oh, but with all Ihad to face, I had forgotten about it. So, I was diagnosed in late 2006, but I think I was diabetic way before then, because I had episodes where my lips, tongue, and throat were numb. I'd wake up and wonder what was wrong. I was also moody I guess you'd call it and kids would say mom, somethings wrong with you. Well it was. The day that I tried to pick up my coffee cup and it seemed to weigh a ton and I had no energy, I went to ER and the ER doc told me I was diabetic and then I went to Doc and he said type 2, gave me a meter and it went from there. For years before that from the time I was about 40 or so, I would get real shaky, but no beating heart sound in my ear like I do now, but bet I was then too.

I very seldom get hungry, so it is hard to remember when I ate, but it seems like every couple hours my sugar goes down. I will keep marking it down when I eat so I remember.

I am not on meds as my sugar went so low I couldn't get it up for a long time and that happened once in Doc's office, so he just said exercise and diet. I just want to get my A1C better and better control if that is possible.

I am taking other meds: Potassium Chloride 2 x a day, Zantac, 2tsp twice a day, Reglan, 1 tsp 3 x a day, vicodin every 4 hours as needed for pain, Carafate,, 2 tsp, twice a day. These are my every day meds and been on them a long time now.

Thanks so much for all the help and suggestions. It really helps.

I don't think 7.1 is bad at all... in fact, I would be quite happy with that reading next go around. I really have no clue about what my next A1c will be ... but I have a feeling it won't be too great :frown:.

Anyway, I would keep doing your best to improve it... I feel it's always a wise idea to strive for better. :top:.

Am1977,

I hope your A1C comes back better for you. This is really hard. I am going to try to get down to at least 6.0 if I can. Spring being here will mean I am a lot more active than in winter so maybe that will help.

Good luck to everyone on their A1C's and thanks so much for the responses.

Thanks Cia Leah... I am certainly hoping that it is not as bad as I imagine, but I know that it's most likely one that's going to show that I need to make some improvements to how I manage things. I will keep you all posted ;)

I admire your motivation and dedication to improve things, I'm sure that your next one will be even better!

Best of luck and I'm sure I'll be seeing you around. :)

Thanks am1977. I am sure trying, but a little while ago, my sugar was 213 and trying to figure out how it got up there. Ugh! First time I've been that high since coming on the Diabetes board and learned all this stuff. I did have an apple bar at eight, so maybe that done it.

Will check before I go to bed. Sometimes it get discouraging.

You are doing well, it takes time and just when you think you got it, your body might throw you a curve ball, but face it head on..... Once your body adjusts to the lower blood sugars, you should not experience more of the shakes or low feelings when it is over 100
