Hi, :)

I thought someone here might have suggestions on how to combine the low cholesterol and diabetes diet together. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have two diet sheets and that is confusing. What you are allowed for one, you aren't allowed for another.

I got the egg beaters, low fat turkey sausage, and cereal bars, which really help for a snack or lunch with a cup of milk. What about cheeses? Is there one certain cheese that is low fat? Is hamburgher a good choice? I get directly from a farmer and the fat content in the meat is less than a teaspoon when you cook it and I have one of those George Forman grills that also help take the fat out. Low fat cottage cheese is what I like instead of potatoes with the hamburger.

I can eat egg salad in morning and it doesn't bother me, since cold foods don't make me sicker, but eggs are bad for cholesterol right?

Thanks so much,

Cia

i dont know if this will help or not but here's what my doc told me

when you have high blood glucose, your cholesterol is also high along with triglycerides etc..

but when you get your blood sugars down to normal levels, the cholesterol most likely will go down with it, once the bg' numbers are down and if your still having cholesterol problems they might try you on meds for cholesterol

so, you may just wanna cut back on regular eggs, they are high in cholesterol, your allowed to have up to about 3 a week without any affect on the cholesterol... etc..

and actually when my bg's got normal, my cholesterol went down to normal range, so what my doc makes sense.... so i would just follow my diabetic diet and see what happens, until your next a1c and if its quite a bit lower and the cholesterol is lower then thats just an affect of the diabetes

It sounds like you are doing very well! I got this off the web:
A number of common cheeses are widely available in reduced-fat form, including Cheddar, Monterey Jack, mozzarella, Brie, Swiss, Colby, Muenster and American. Lower fat cheeses tend to be milder in flavor, have a more rubbery texture, and have different cooking characteristics.

.... eggs are bad for cholesterol right?
...
That is a relic of outdated thinking, which was based on bad science. The more cholesterol you get from food, like eggs, the less cholesterol your liver produces. Your body needs 1000-2000mg of cholesterol a day. Only 50% of consumed cholesterol is absorbed. Each egg contains about 210mg of cholesterol. So you would have to eat 10+ eggs a day before the cholesterol in them would make your serum cholesteol levels go up. I eat 3 eggs a day, every day. And it has not increased my cholesterol. Many low-carbers eat 5 eggs a day with no adverse effect.

When it was realised that cholesterol in food doesn't raise serum cholesterol, the blame was shifted to saturated fat. This is also really bad science. Consumed saturated fat doesn't morph into cholesterol - they are completely different molecules. The body turns excess glucose into saturated fat anyway. I eat as much saturated fat as I can. And my lipid profile has improved.

If you want to contain you BG, the best thing you can do is avoid carbohydrate and get those calories from fat instead. There is no good reason to avoid fat, as long as you are getting the right amont of calories. Saturated fat is preferable to unsaturated fat because it is more stable. Eggs are indeed a super-food. They are a marvelous source of protein, fat and vitamins. And the yolk is the best, most nutritious part.

Thanks Sweetcheeks, Lloyd, and Blue Sky. I really appreciate the information, and I didn't even know they made all those cheeses in low fat. I need to shop better.

Here is my cholesterol reading this time and last time and it did come down and for the past couple weeks and being here and you all helping me get my sugar levels better, must have helped tremendously.

Total Cholesterol was 244 and now is 214
LDL 168 128
HDL 23 33
Tri's 350 264

I think the better diet the last couple weeks have helped and I thought maybe getting my sugar down was helping the cholesterol, but I still have a ways to go to get them at normal levels.

Does anyone know what the normal levels or where they want your cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and Tri's at for diabetics?

I was on Zetia, which worked really great, but I got a really bad sinus infection, which it can cause from what Doc said, and I was tired, but not like when on the other kinds of cholesterol meds. He said to take again, but I would rather try to do it on my own first.

Thanks so much,

can you explain to me how to count fats, i was told to only have 1 fat choice with my meals, but.... i tend to overdo it accroding to my dieticians instructions

but my way of thinking is, as long as try to be as balanced as I can and with in my calorie limit, what difference does it matter how much fat i eat??

how many fat grams should one eat normally?

I only have one fat choice for each meal, except for supper and think it is 2 on my diabetic diet. I'd like to know this too.

Good question!

when my blood sugar level was at 9.4 my cholesterol was at 264 and my trig was at 974 now that my blood sugar is at 4.8 to 5.3 my cholesterol is 113 and trig is at 99 so it work to work on your diabetic side first and the your other problems will fall in line also

Celt, I am beginning to wonder if that is true too. When my sugar and I know it was running high, my cholesterol was higher, but now it went down, my cholesterol went from the 244 to 214 and the other yucky cholesterol stuff went down some too. Got get better readings is all there is to it! :)
