Nausea and the liver

Can someone please explain why metformin and symlin have nausea as a side effect? It has nothing to do with digestion, and seems to be linked to some liver functions. I realise that it's probably due to inhibition of glucose production (or emission) from the liver, just not sure why the nausea?
