View Full Version : Training Ride 1 for Half Century April 19th

I am entering the half century at the ADA's tour de cure here in sac. I am going to track my diabetes along the way, and any suggestions or comments are welcomed.

I have had 4 weeks of **** at work (literally 100 hr work weeks including weekends) so I haven't been able to get much exercise in. I am starting to get a gut :(. my blood sugars have been running high; then I finally got to play raquet ball on thursday; something we do at work about three times a week per average when we aren't slammed and lo and behold my sugars get dramatically better.

I would suggest that if you are starting your cycle immediately after eating then I would reduce insulin intake for the meal prior to starting. If on the other hand you won't be starting until an hour or so after eating then rather than reducing by much I would carry snacks with me and take them every half hour or so. Make sure your blood sugars are ok before you start as I've experienced bad cramp due to starting with a high BS. Also, if you are on a pump, reduce your basal. What works for me is reducing to zero. That may not suit you so be careful with your choices. I would however advise snacking as you cycle.

I always keep some basal running while riding. About 50% works for me. I do carry a "picnic basket" as my wife calls it with me and I have used it many times. I agree with the above if I eat and cycle within the hour I will reduce my carbs by 50% of what I ate. For 20 to 30 mile rides this works for me. Anything longer and I test about every 1/2 hour and adjust accordingly.
I also have my BS rise if I do not excercise for a few days. I just feel bad and can't wait to go back to a regular routine and get things back in line. My wife and I did the Tour de Cure last year and rode the 50 miles and had a great time. I did not have the pump at that time.

Oh, man! Half centuries! BriOnH, thanks for reminding me of one of the simple pleasures I enjoyed for a decade before I got sick. You've inspired me to aim for the June ADA rides here in NJ as a reason to get off my a$$ and back in my clips again.

That looks perfect, Brian... during your ride anyway. :D Just curious, how much did you correct for your low bg? a little more than normal or the normal amount... did you do anything differently - I wonder what effect the exercise had on increasing it as well as decreasing it?

Thanks Jen :) - I drank a mt dew and should have corrected for it. I think the exercise lately has gotten me closer to the 100 mark a lot easier then without it. It seems to help stabalize sugars for me as well.

Sorry for the late responses. I have been busting my ars on getting an update to Diabuddies completed for this ride(I will probably call this ride a race a lot, since for some of us it is). I plan on a release on April 14th, and it's a good one. Lot's of improvements. There will be an Ultra client added :). Easier to share data on the Diabuddies forum. enhanced charting and reporting features, and more!

For the Tour De Cure I will check my sugar probably every hour. If I am grooving and feeling well though I probably wont test much, however, if I feel the slightest bit iffy I'll test which could be every 15 min if I am really off. Part of this training is to make sure I stay right at target as far as health and velocity.
Do you think the pump will help a lot if you did it today? My rides are scheduled so its very easy to adjust my basal the night before, if I don't adjust my basal I'll just skip on boluses and ride. I prefer the earlier.
I carry 3 x 24 grams gel, glucagon, insulin(lantus/novolog/2 days supply meds) in bike pouch. Tester, strips, pricker, glucose tabs in pockets. Water bottle.

Back to the grind :). Ive been taking days off work just to work on this lol. On the 14th I am going to have a tshirt with the word "www.Diabuddies.com" in big letters on back, and of course my DF bracelet. Glow In the Sun.

Yes, along with Pulmonary Sarcoidosis and Hypothyroidism, all diagnosed within the first six months of 2000...
I signed up for the 30 mile run in Morristown, June 13. It should be interesting... my old racing bike has long ago bit the dust... replaced by a cheap hybrid with 1 1/4" tires. I will definitely miss my Scott aerobars and my disc wheel!
BTW, I credit all the riding I did with keeping my lungs from getting too much damage by the Sarc. I can hardly wait to get out there again and ride...

That must have been quite a shock. I am glad you are getting better.
My bikes are quite old now too. I too also got very sick at the peak of my riding. Let biking go for about 11 years now and getting back into it is quite $$. I am putting together a bike right now, that should be ready in about a week a two. Until then I am borrowing one of my dads bikes. It's OK to train on but it's pretty big. He's a 6'4 dude and I'm 5'8. It works but the bike I am building will fit a lot better.
When are you going to start to train?

ASAP! I'd be grateful if the weather stopped flip-flopping daily. Our spring has been nothing but a lot of false starts, almost a daily exchange of cold and warm days, and lots of tree pollen, which messes with my breathing. Excuses, excuses...

I rode today. A lot easier this time then last week. 32 miles. I will post my diagrid later. I goofed up on the date here! The ADA ride is MAY 14th! phew.
Let me know when you get back on your bike Mike!! Stationary bikes are good (same with treadmills!!) are great for bad weather.

What a difference a day makes! I just found out that the ankle-to-knee wrap I had to wear in February to March (vascular issues and a leg infection) was not a temporary thing, but is now a permanent one! Brion, do you think cycling with a tightly wrapped calf is going to be healthy? I should've asked my Dr., but I was in a bit of shock and only thouight of this now. I'm really looking forward to some biking, man!

I am SOOO glad to find some fellow cyclists here!!! I was just diagnosed 3 days ago with pre-diabetes and put on Actos. I have been really concerned about how to continue to ride without going into hypo-whatever, low blood sugar.
I have no education in this at all, I was just given Actos samples, explained there are no lifestyle changes I can make as I am only a few pounds overweight, already excercise and eat fairly healthy.
I have some major mountain biking rides planned, just bought a new road bike and try to ride to/from work, weather permitting. I don't know how the Actos will effect these activites.
