I am just trying to get some idea of what to ask my nurse educator tomorrow. My humalog and humalin are co pays of 35.00 each, plus 5.00 for the syringes.
Not to mention to co pay for my ascensia contour testing strips are 35.00, and 15.00 foir the lancets
I am switching nmy monitor, so I can cut the cost down on that, but watned to know fi there is anything that is comparable to humalog and humalin? I am just needing a new precription, as over 100 a month in co pays is not doable for me:(

The closest thing to Humalog is Novolog. They are nearly identical +/- 15 minutes. There is also Apidra that is in the same category but it starts acting a little slower (30 minutes compared to 15) and then is suppose to be fully out of the system much faster (3 hours compared to 6 hours.) I would see what copay Novolog falls under though. For me, Novolog was a cheaper copay than Humalog so I switched.
As for Humalin....I assume you mean Humalin N (NPH). The problem is there is nothing "similar" to it. All of the other ones out there have a different action profile and generally have no curve. That's not a problem, but you then have to teach yourself a different method of insulin giving and learn a few new things.

i will ask all of this to my doctor of course, but would like some knowledge prior to talking to them! LOL

If you switch to Novolog you do whatever you do with Humalog.
aka...I'm drawing a blank if either can be mixed or not. I know if you switch to Lantus that it's 100% for sure you can't mix any "log" insulin and Lantus.

hmmmmmm...I wonder if I can convince my doctor to give me some samples!

Humalin and Novolog can't be mixed in the same syringe, but you can take Humalin as a basal insulin and Novolog as your meal bolus insulin, just not in the same syringe.

thanks for the clarification!
I was looking up novalog and came up with novalin also.
I realllly want to use just 1 syringe and 1 injection, I cannot handle having to do it 2 times in one shot!
Thanks for all the help, you guys are the best!

Humulin R and Humulin N both cost half of what Humalog, Novolog and Lantus cost (in many cases they cost much less). They can be mixed together, but it isn't as easy to achieve really tight glucose control with them as it is with the more expensive insulins. As far as mixing Novolog and Humulin N is concerned..... you can always try. Mixing Lantus, for example, is a big no-no, but I've mixed it with Humalog without any problems.

Holly............I have boxes of lancets if you need them. Also, Walmart sells them for alot less than the $15 co pay that it's costing you.
PM me if you'd like me to mail out some lancets to you.
