Where can these be bought in bulk? I got a box of 125 from CVS last week, but they go quick! Especially since I am rearely home when I give myself insulin & when I prick my fingers...
The ones I have from CVS also are soooo small! LOL
Any other suggestions?:D

Wow, I didn't know anyone actually used alcohol wipes. LOL
I think you could probably find them in bulk from Costco or Sam's Club, but I'm not sure.

What about using a very small spritz bottle and fill it will alcohol and a bit of tissue to wipe off the excess. May not be small enough to put in your supply case, but it will create less non bio-degradable trash.
I haven't used alcohol wipes for about 8 years now, even when I was "shooting". I think it's a personal preference as to whether or not you use them. For me, it was just one more thing to remember/carry, and I have enough of those things already!

When I was on shots I use to just buy the bottle of alcohol rub and a thing of cotton balls. The cotton balls could sometimes be reused if placed in a small container. Simply open the bottle of alcohol, hold the cotton ball over the end, give it a shake or turn it upside down, and you have an alcohol covered cotton ball perfect for rubbing the skin.
If you really want the individual wipes....

Will 4000 last you long enough? And at $62.95 I think that's a pretty good deal.

If you do choose to buy that box of 4000 alcohol preps, to confuse the packing guy, you should buy the single box of scooby-doo band-aids. (http://www.firstaidsuppliesonline.com/nav.pl?cat=NavBandage&prod=0104458)

Now now....be nice...because I'm sure they just ship that box that's in the picture with all the boxes of wipes in it. I bet if you ordered the band aids they would be mailed seperately and take 10 weeks to show up, lol. Heck, I'd do it. LOL :T

Perhaps instead of alcohol wipes, you could use the waterless hand sanitizer (i'm assuming you're using the wipes for your fingers). This might be cheaper.

I only use alcohol wipes to clean the top of my insulin vial.
You could buy a bottle of alcohol and use cotton balls to cut back on the cost, or buy the wipes at Walmart...... they're always the cheapest.

I never use alcohol pads to clean my fingers with. I only use them before I put in a new infusion set, and even that is iffy!

CVS pharmacies carry a little pen-shaped pump bottle with hand sanitizer in it... you could always refill it with alcohol as needed. Portable and sanitary!
BTW, as I progress with learning the art of syringes, I am using my alcohol swabs less and less. Bend like a reed in the wind, I always say.

Guess I am a filthy beast. I haven't used alcohol wipes since 1988.

I didn't use them for shots or testing.
I do, though, use either an alcohol pad or IV prep to clean my infusion set area before I insert. That'll be in there 3 days, so I figure it should be pretty darn clean. That, and it helps for me to ensure good adhesion.
Like jedi I stopped using alcohol wipes. My uncle on the other hand. What he does is fill a glass container with alcohol rub and keep the cotton balls soaking in the container until he is ready to use one.

Same here. For all you folks who have said you don't use the wipes at all, have you ever had a problem with insulin going bad as a result of not sanitizing the top of the vial? I've cut myself shaving too many times to be worried about cleaning my skin before lancing/injecting, but I'd hate to ruin a perfectly good bottle of insulin...

When we get new glasses, we get a small spray bottle of cleaner with them. It maybe holds 2 oz of liquid. We have many as we all wear glasses. When they are empty, I fill then half way with alcohol and finish with water. I carry napkins in my purse and use the spray to keep my glasses clean. I get a big bottle of alcohol for 50 cents, and it lasts a long time. But this little bottle would be great to carry and spray when you are out. I hardly ever use my wipes.

If you use hand sanitizer before a finger prick, be prepared for it to hurt like a mutha when you do the stick.

That's the same as my son. His endo told him not to wipe his fingers with alcohol wipes as it can affect the readings. We do use them for set-changes though.
I don't know whether these can be shipped overseas, but we've found these wipes fantastic - see the link to Diabete-ezy. The little case fits inside Jack's BG meter and attaches by velcro - so they are always there when he tests. There are refills available. They sort of pop-up when you open the lid like a small tissue box.
The mum has developed these wipes because her husband, an international rugby league player for Australia, and three of their 5 kids, have type 1 diabetes. The wipes are just big enough to wipe the finger, and clean-off any remaining blood after. The fact it fits in the case is great, b/c I know he cleans his fingers before testing, which really makes a difference. We just ran out of them recently and missed the convenience so much I just ordered some more.

To give you an idea of the size of my son's meter, he uses an Optium Exceed, which is called Precision Xstra in US.

All alcohol does is get the germs angry. :) It takes at least 20 minutes of complete immersion for germs to be killed.
There was a study in Great Britain in the early 90s that took 400 diabetics, split them into two groups- those who used alcohol before testing (or injection- I forget which) and those who did not. There were only 2 infections, and they were both in the group that used alcohol. Unfortunately, I forget the source of the info now, but it was a legit study. May have been published in The Lancet- I forget.
Alcohol has only one advantage- if the area is dirty, and you can't wash with soap and water, it will remove the surface dirt.

I don't know how long they last, but they will dry out. I had a box of 100 I prolly bought in the late 80's that I tried a few years ago. They were totally dried out.
Shouldn't be using them for finger pricks anyway.
