View Full Version : A little frustrated today

It seems my BGs (& possibly, sets) don't want to play nice with me....bgs have been a little erratic, and to be honest, I'm not entirely sure why. I think one possible issue is the infusion sets (I'm going to order the longer variety next time around), but other than that, I'm just not sure...

My BG was 110 at 11:00pm last night. Shortly thereafter (around 12:30am or so), I had a 323. After a set move, it dropped back down to 136 (at 1:30am).

Then today at 5:00pm, it was 162 (a little high, but not outrageous & I took a bolus to eat something). At 6:50pm, it was 305 and at 7:00pm, it was up to 346. I moved my set yet again.

Let me make it clear right up front....I'm NOT complaining about my Diabetes. I don't mind having it and know it could be a he** of a lot worse. That said, it's days like this that are frustrating to me. I am a "Hyperphobe" and cannot stand to have high levels, so these numbers clearly irritate me.

I also wonder if my meter isn't slightly "wacked" at times....These readings can be significantly off in a matter of minutes, and it usually takes me longer than just an hour to come down from 323 to the 100s! Oh well, gotta love days like this.

Sorry it's your turn for one of "these" days, Dewey!

I think it's a-ok to vent/complain about D every once in a while. I agree with you, it's not the worst thing in the world, and we do ok with it, but there are still times when you just have to scream it out "GGRRRRRR, this makes me (insert expletive) grumpy!!!" (heard from a little girl...without the expletive of course) :D

Here's hoping tomorrow it settles down. (Is your vial ok, are you feeling ok?)

Thanks, Jen. :)

I think the vial's ok...it's not been out of the fridge for too long, but I got another bottle, just to be safe.

The odd thing is, that now that I moved my set, took a bolus, etc., it's taking my BG a little longer (as is usual) to come down..These are the days that just make a person feel...:s:
LOL.

Sorry Dewey! I know how frustrated you must be, I have days like that and nothing seems to help.

I really hate stupid days like that Dewey. I have had some days that just go that way and there is no explanation. Longer sets may work out for you. Also maybe a BRAND NEW site location that has never been tried before might work also. I know..... it is hard to find that location. Ya gotta be imaginitive.

Oh.... Don't go to Carwy for sympathy.... :whistling

There you go, Dewey, it's all about perspective...

Don't mind me, I know you must be feeling better now, and that's why I am trying to set a lighter mood. :D

Wow Dew, that's me down pat. I don't mind
Diabetes but I'm more afraid of the highs.
Actually the occasional lows don't bother me
much but those highs gotta go asap.

I had the same thought as Nancy. Since
you've been on the pump that long it's possibly
slow absorption. I'll be surprised if the longer
insets(and/or "new/virgin site" :D )don't set you
back right.

As I mentioned, in March I had a 2 1/2 days
of fasting and regular shots to get my sugars
set right. I still don't know what caused that
one. I figured "something" entered my system
and it took that treatment to get rid of it. I've
done that treatment on occasion, through the
years.

"Oh Diabetes....". I hope you're back to "normal"
soon. ;)

Hey, Dew. Sorry I'm late to this thread, and hope you are feeling better by now. Days like this suck.

I am quick to suspect a set issue as well, but am patient to correct and see if it improves to a point. My sets are not really "movable", so if I yank one it's gone forever and I start completely fresh.

Hang in there!

With the highs, have you SWITCHED out the insulin?
When you have UNexpected Highs on the pump, you should switch out set, cartridge, AND INSULIN, not just the set. There might be a cartridge (resevoir) and/or a insulin problem.
Again, I would suggest switching out the insulin to another vial that is not the same lot number (if at all possible).

*sigh*

Changed my set at dinner last night, and I skyrocketed to 17.7 two hours later. I had reason to believe it was Mr. Liver's fault, so I corrected (heavily). I also suspect the set as I had trouble inserting it, and it was in a knwn trouble area. Three hrs later (1am) I'm at 16.5. I change sets and correct again, moderately this time, setting an alarm for two hrs. At 3am I'm down to 13.5, so I correct lightly. 4.3 at breakfast. I do hate these episodes :(

Sorry to hear you had an incident, too. :( It is frustrating on so many levels...Bad sets/sites cause more issues than anything else, and are sometimes hard to catch until BGs have risen pretty significantly. Hope everything is ok again.

In my situation, I'm going to do a few things to see if they'll help:

1. Get longer sets (8mm Rapid-Ds rather than the usual 6mm)
2. Do basal testing. I did it a short while back, but it is good to check every now & then, especially if any changes have occurred (i.e. weight loss, weight gain, dietary changes, etc.).

Hopefully these will help get things back on track overall, as I'm tired of experiencing highs.
