Hello everyone,
I just wanted to fill everyone in on what was going on with my son after everyone was so kind to post ideas and experiences when I posted about 6 weeks ago.
My son was Dx 1/07 with an A1c of 17. He took his dx very seriously and brought his A1c down to 9 in about a month and to 6 last week.
About 3 wks into insulin treatment he began to experience severe leg and foot pain and after a few weeks lost the ability to walk without severe pain. He had to quit college and his job and move home because he could no longer move around enough to take care of himself. Folks here shared experiences with tight g/l control and neuropathy but no one seemed to have as extreme reactions.
It turned out he had a fairly rare condition known as insulin neuritis. It appears to occur, for the most part, to young males who bring their blood sugar under control quickly. It is accompanied by very severe pain, depression and sometimes the loss of ambulatory function.
It took awhile for his doctor to get on board with our internet research and then his pain and neuropathy meds caused his digestive system to shut down so he was hospitalized at Univ. of Mich. hospital where he was seen by some top endros and neurologists. Even they could only generalize about his condition as there are only case studies not controlled research.
His doctors have suggested that he try and loosen control and keep his b/g in the 170's but that is driving him crazier than establishing good #s.
He is still bed bound but the doctors believe from the case studies available that his condition will improve over time.
I don't want to suggest that newly diagnosed people be casual about efforts to control b/s. The doctors stated that they have only been able to trace factors in this complication and that many people establish great control without severe insulin neuritis.
Just thought I'd put it out there, in case someone else comes to the forum with a similar issue.
Ironic isn't it??
