I hadn't had Chinese in awhile and last week I really wanted some. I was tired, getting home late from work. As I walked into the take out place I remembered seeing something about a "special diet menu" on the back of their menus, so I flipped to that. It said that all dishes were served steamed, with no sugar, cornstarch, oil or MSG added. I ordered chicken and mixed vegetables. Forgot to ask for brown rice, though. When I got back to my apartment I realized they were served without sugar, cornstarch or oil because they were served with *nothing* - no type of sauce at all. I had a bottle of light teriyaki sauce in my fridge, so I measured out some of that and added it to the food. I meant to have only half the rice (1/2 cup) but then got greedy and dumped the whole thing in my bowl.

I obviously meausred the rice, and I also pulled out & weighed the veggies (broccoli, carrots, baby corn, snap peas, I think...) to get carb counts. The sauce was easy since the info was right on the bottle. I did a straight bolus for the meal and my BGs were great all night through morning.

Next time I want Chinese I think I'll do the same thing. The diet menu isn't huge but there's enough variety to keep me happy for awhile, especially since I don't get Chinese often. I have some other Asian sauces at home and knowing exactly what I'm eating, with no hidden carbs and unknown grams of fat, makes it so much easier to bolus and I can change the flavors each time depending on the sauce.

I also find the steamed veggies and chicken to be easy to handle. The place I go to does provide sauce, but on the side.
