"Food companies have doubled the amount of sugar they add to some of their most popular products including soups and cereals in an attempt to attract sweet-toothed customers."

Yes, and it made me mad even before I was diabetic. But I garden and cook from scratch most of the time, so it is easy to avoid all that sugar. I don't think sugar enhances the flavors in most things anyway. It is stupid to put it in.

Unfortunately, it's all about money.

Look what an incredible job the soft drink companies did peddling their liquid sugar!

Only when demand dropped did they come out with "diet" drinks.

You can't fight Madison Avenue I guess, I'll just continue to read labels and not buy junk.

We have as many names for sugar as the Eskimos have for snow. Some of my favorites:

Evaporated cane juice
Cane juice crystals
Cane juice solids
Corn syrup
Corn syrup solids
Corn sweetner
Dehydrated white grape juice
fruit juice
fruit juice solids
concentrated fruit juice
Honey
Maltose
Lactose
Sorbitol (yes, I know it is technically a sugar alcohol, but guess what, it has the same carbs as sugar plus it has the added benefit of giving you the trots.
Malitol
Manitol
Polydextrose
Molasses
Maple Syrup
Turbinado
Malt syrup
Malt syrup solids
Barley syrup
Rice syrup
any other thing that ends in "ose"
and the ever popular "natural sweetners".

What really kills me is watching newly diagnosed diabetics stock up on sugar free cookies, ice cream and who knows what else. The FDA should really not allow this mislabeling. And the AMA should really encourage doctors to inform diabetic patients to stay away from this stuff.

What works for me is simply to check the carb content. As long as I stay below 60g of carbs or so at a sitting I'm fine.

It doesn't seem to matter where they come from.
