Just wondering How long after you were diagnosed did you go into your honeymoon period? How long did it last? Were your numbers pretty normal?
We still don't have a straight answer on weather my husband has type 2 or 1.5. I am inclined to think it's type 1.5 because of the presence of GAD 65 antibodies. Also he has had WONDERFUL control, with very little effort after his initial diagnosis. Not to say he hasn't changed his eating habits, but he has been getting slightly more lax and better glucose number.
He was diagnosed in January with an A1c of 9.2 and just last week it was 5.8. So the doctor took him off lantus and increased his metformin to 2500 mg a day.
Anyhow, my husband was super hungry and went to an all you can eat place today, and he told me he pigged out. His post prandial glucose one and a half hours later was 94. He hasn't had a number above 140 in almost two weeks.
So he asked me if this was because he was in a honeymoon. I am assuming it is...just wondering what you all think, and what your honeymoon experiences were like. Thanks in advance.

When I was diagnosed my a1c was 8.2, so also not that high. My doctor started me on insulin right away, and then I found that I was present for antibodies. So it was type 1. My doctor didn't use the category 1.5 with me. But I always thought that the bottom line is that if you have antibodies, it's an auto-immune disease and therefore it's type 1 (or 1.5).

I think I am still honeymooning. I was diagnosed in July 2006, so about 10 months ago. Only just recently have my ratios started to change. So maybe this is indicating the end of my honeymoon. But I am still not using that much insulin, relatively speaking, and last I checked my c-peptide is still "normal". I go to the doctor next week. I'll be curious to see if my c-peptide results have changed...

Isn't metformin only administered to people with type 2? Metformin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metformin)

it can be used in the beginning of type 1.5 also, that is why some people are misdiagnosed, because initially oral meds can help. Metformin helps with insulin resistance, and also it slows down the amount of glucose that the liver puts out. My husband does not have insulin resistance, when they tested his inulin in his system it was 7 (the range was 1-14), so he was right in the middle. It just seems to work for him right now.

Honeymoons don't last forever... Mine lasted 3-4 years.

I am 14 months post diagnosis. Just today I am going to add basal back into the mix as needed. My a1c at diagnosis was 10% then I hovered around 8.5 for about 6months, now down to 6.5%
