Doesn't happen often but... running out of ideas for breakfast. And (most of all) kind of fed up too.
Help? :)
What works for you at breakfast time?
What's the best ever breakfast you'd recommend, something that really works well for you, and is easy on BG.

Hi Marie: I'm a creature of habit, I eat the same things quite often so I don't have to think, esp. in the mornings. Some of my breakfast standbys:
1) Scrambled eggs or eggbeaters, (add whatever you fancy: onions, mushrooms, green peppers, eggs, salsa, bacon, ham, turkey) with cheese sprinkled on top.
2) South beach breakfast bar (my favorite is cinnamon-raisin or peanut butter)
3) EAS Carb Advantage protein shake (available at pharmacies or Walmart) 100 calories, 15 gms protein and 4 carbs.
I'm not a cereal person, but I have found that the Kashi Go Lean Crunch has only a minimal effect on my blood sugar...it's loaded with fiber. Usually, I stick with #s 1-3 and notice i'm full longer and my 2 hr is usually under 100.
I have been known to have a cheeseburger (no bread) for breakfast as well, much to my husbands dismay (he cringes if it's not "breakfast food.")

Steel cut oats. They're low GI and a little goes a long way to filling you up, so they can be low-ish carb too. The only problem is that they take a long time to make. I usually make a lot and then freeze them in serving size containers for reheating in the microwave. Then I add some Splenda brown sugar and cinnamon.....mmmm.....

a slice of flaxseed bread, toasted with a soft boiled egg on it
on weekends, i go out one day to have eggs benedict made for me, skipping the hashbrowns that come with that

I also eat oatmeal, (like the idea of freezing the steel cut oats Bethany!) and now that there is the Splenda brown sugar, I will be trying that. I also have cheerios and if I have time some scrambled eggs or egg beaters with turkey bacon. If you are into the toast the weigh watchers bread is pretty good and it is 18g of carbs for 2 slices.

I find spreading my bf over an hour or two really works: fruit and yogurt mostly. Even though the GI can be high, spreading it out does seem to eliminate high spikes for me.

South Beach PB bar for me! That's my breakfast monday thru friday. They have minimal effect on blood sugar.
On the weekends I'll usually eat eggs and bacon, or Kashi go lean crunch with Soy milk.

Two rounds of wholemeal / grainy toast and a grapefruit with a small sprinkle of fructose is my usual morning tipple and it works well.
Contents of the toast varies between a poached egg, marmite, butter and marmalade and peanut butter depending how virtuous I'm feeling. Oh, and decent tea made in a pot. And a couple of espressos to to start.
Porridge is fine as well. Occasionally at the weekends I'll go with home made pancakes or waffles, shoot up plenty and enjoy them :D
I find that most cereals suit me far less well than the toast / fruit breakfast, resulting in nasty peaks mid morning. My only way really to do even Bran flakes with any success is to over-bolus for the carb content to hit the spike then eat fruit 1-2 hours later. Which works if you're around the house but if you get involved in something then it's glucose tablet time... I love cornflakes, but they are a treat that I rarely go for as the spike they cause is scary...

Welcome aboard, Jim ;) This is a very helpful place. I only joined up 5 months back and the improvement in my health during that time is astonishing. I happen to be type 1, so my type 2 knowledge isn't great. The type 2 forum should be right up your street :)
My Monday thru Friday breakfast is one egg over medium and one slice of rye toast buttered, washed down with a glass of 1% milk.
I find a mix of carb and protein to be the most satisfying.
Oh, and a liberal dose of hot sauce on the egg. ;)

XMenace, I like the idea of spreading breakfast over 1 or 2 hours. Work always starts at 11 am for me so I really have the time to do this.

I'm also a creature of habit. My breakfast usually consists of two pieces of light wheat bread with butter and a cup of coffee. Some days I'll have an omelet with bacon and cheese or a bowl of Special K Protein Plus cereal with low carb milk. Pretty boring! LOL

For me it's good old peanut butter sandwich with some skim milk and piece of fruit. I have trouble staying full, at this does the trick for me. Especially if I munch while working so it lasts an hour or so.

South Beach Diet High Protein Cereal Bars
Hi and welcome!
Since I was very young, I've spread my breakfast into two parts. I usually have a piece of toast (lots of fiber-Orowheat Best Winter Wheat) canola oil margerine and some sugar free jam with my coffee, then some form of protein in a couple of hours, cheese, eggs, or light and fit yogurt. Lunch or dinner is a salad with protein. I try to avoid another carb dose, but sometimes the flesh is weak and I have one more bit of carb at lunch or dinner.
Barring that, I eat low-carb pizza, a peanut butter sandwich, a tuna salad or yogurt and cereal with a touch of fruit. Or what the heck, a piece of cherry pie (no sugar if I can get it) on my birthday.
The sad but jarring truth is that I can maintain weight and energy on HALF of what I ate when I was younger. ****!
I keep my A1C's between 5.5 (yea!) and 7 (nuts!)

I love steel cut oatmeal and I also make up several servings and store them in individual 1 cup serving containers. I use the overnight soak method. Boil 4 cups of water, add 1 cup of oats. Cover, turn off heat, leave it sitting on the stove overnight. In the morning it just needs to be heated for a few minutes to get any remaining liquid absorbed. I usually only make 4 servings at a time and don't bother to freeze it, because I'll eat it every day until they're gone.
I've also made them in a slow cooker but they come out too mushy/creamy. I like the texture from cooking on the stovetop.

Since I work nights now, my first meal is at 1030pm, I eat dinner, lunch at 3am and breakfast at 9amish, however, i rarely eat breakfast foods now, just cant stomach it anymore.
But if your talking about breakfast foods
3/4 or 1 cup frosted cherios or golden crisp, 8oz of 2% milk, 8oz of Lite Mott's apple juice
1 scrambled egg with fried bologna, miracle whip on toast (regular bread, cause i dont eat bread often, wheat goes to waste) and sometimes i add cheese
2 small pancakes with s/f syrup with peanut butter on top.
tortilla fill with salsa, bacon, egg, cheese

Thanks guys. I feel welcome already! Yes, the blog is really an idea I have had to present the better things that come with having diabetes type 2 - like improved diet and exercise. I think we need more positive news! I will be updating a few times a week too. :D

I eat bizarre Japanese stuff for breakfast, like natto (fermented soybeans) with shirataki noodles. The natto is high in protein and fiber, and the shirataki noodles are insanely low in carbs and high in fiber.
Natto is an acquired taste, but I really, really love it. If you're adventuresome, try it sometime! :eek: :D

Natto is an acquired taste, but I really, really love it. If you're adventuresome, try it sometime! :eek: :D

They come out fantastic in the crockpot too!!!
As for me, my typical weekday breakfast is a diet coke :o
On the weekends I like turkey bacon, eggs, fruit...

Either:
Eggs, veggies and one slice of 10 grain toast, or:
Plain yogurt, walnuts and Cream of Wheat or Red Mill 10 Grain Hot Cereal. It's getting warmer out, so I mix the whole batch up, and enjoy. Plenty of crunch, balance, and I always have good #'s after.
