I finally got my sugars down to normal and told my doctor I was still so tired I could go to sleep any time of the day or night he ran some tests and found out that i have anemia or low iron...they are not sure what is causing it but are doing some tests to see if I am loosing blood anywhere that they cannot see. I am taking iron pills and for about three days last week I felt great didn't need or take a nap, but now I am back to being extremely tired. Another doctor has put me on providgil thinking it would help me out but i havent been on that for more than a day yet. I am so physically tired I could sleep all day and night my body just wants to fall in a pile and lay there I was just wondering if any type ones had ever dealt with this and what they were able to do or find out.

I believe iron deficiency is often diet related. The people I've known with it, one a teenage athlete, required about three months of therapy to get back to strength. It's not a quick fix.

Well i guess I have had to change my diet somewhat I am on cumadin for a blood clot and I have to stay away from most green vegtables and any vitamin k. But other then that nothing has changed. My sister had it when she was an adolesent and grew out of it but I guess what is concerning me is they are talking about internal bleeding or loosing blood somehow so I am wondering if anyone has had this before. I guess i am wondering if I can't help my doctors figure out what it is before I have to have the colonoscapy LOL

It does take several weeks to get your iron back up if you're anemic. Don't give up. I think low iron can also affect bg testing and definitely A1cs, but I don't have any details.

This is why I had to have all those test last week, and they still do not know what is going on with me. Since I had cancer, they keep looking for more of it, but have not found any. The Digestive doctor wants me to swallow one of those new cameras that goes through your system, but the insurance is balking. I also struggle with total fatigue, I push myself, only to make it worse. I am taking 2 iron tablets a day, but they don't help much. Besides being very anemic this time, the doctor said my blood cells were very small. The last time I went through this, they did an "Iron IV". I felt good for several months, but it came back worse than it was before. This doctor said he can do a "quick fix" and give me a transfusion, but they still do not know what is causing it. I'm just tired of feeling this way and feeling that it is somehow my fault...I work hard at my diet and doing what the doctors tell me to help.

my sister has just fought with cervical cancer and I was kind of worried about that but i have had diabetes for 31 years now and I am just starting to take care of it so I have probably really messed up my system my son is embarrassed by me because freinds come over and help me clean but I don't know what else to do. It really makes you feel pretty worthless but I hate to say it I am glad I am not alone thanks very much for replying

I also am anemic and have been for years. No reason has been found to cause this. I take prescription Niferex 150 Forte Caps 150mg once a day. This seems to help. Since it is a prescription it is cheaper then over the counter iron pills. Also I was on Procrit for awhile which helps build the blood count.

I will ask the doctor about a prescription, I paid almost $10 for a store brand 15 day supply of Ferrous Sulfate, over the counter. I can get 3 months for $14, prescription. So maybe anemia is a side effect of being Diabetic fo a long time????????? And I can say no to all these expensive test!

Do you have heavy periods? that causes aneamia but also the lack of green veggies would too.
Taking an iron suppliment will take quite a while to build up iron levels again so don't panic.
How low were your levels?
Have you also been tested for pernicious aneamia?

Pooh, don't know what I would do without my husband. He spent 35 years never picking up a sock, let alone helping with housework. Now he does more than I do. I feel guilty letting him do it, so I push myself to do more...it isn't easy, but if I go at a job in short bursts, I can get it done. Just a short time ago, I could make my whole house shine in a few hours, now it takes me all day to clean one room. But I do it. If your son is embarrassed, tell him to help more! I hope they find something to help you soon, but demand some help from your family.

My CDE told me that I'm "slightly anemic", and the last few times I've tried to donate blood I was deferred because my hemoglobin number wasn't high enough. The New York Blood Center called me again this week and I told them it probably wasn't any use for me to go in but they're very stuboorn, so I made an appointment for next week. I had been taking an iron tablem but stopped when I got constipated but I srated taking it again this week and I'll see how it goes.

My blood tests last month (from the lab) came back normal. I eat a lot of leafy greens but not a huge amount of meat. I've been trying to eat more meat to see if that helps, but I don't even like red meat much, just chicken/turkey. I really do think I get enough dietary iron (there's a small amount in my multivitamin as well) so I don't know why my hemoglobin number has been low when I try to donate blood. I was never deferred until last November (I think).

I'm anemic and have been for over 20 years.......way before being dx'd with diabetes. I cannot take iron pills alone, so I am taking a Multi-Vitamin that contains iron.

SueM also brought up a good point regarding those of us who suffer from heavy periods. I had a procedure done in early December called Novo-Sure. It's an alternative to a hysterectomy. My period now consists of just spotting and my blood work for anemia is now normal. I'm still tired most days, but I think I was just born tired! LOL

Also.........if I'm not mistaken, those taking Coumadin are supposed to limit or not eat green veggies, so that right there causes a problem for those with anemia.

I have no idea what my results were :stupido3: I do my tests in the lab and then they get the results and his nurse calls:call: me and tells me what he wants me to do. If I think to ask her next time I will ask her what my test results were.
As for that time of month:argh: they have become a bit more heavy i used to just go for two or three days now i am wearing protection for 5 so I guess it has changed. I just keep thinking maybe I am trying to go through menapause my mom went through it really young but everyone says I am too young for that....don't they know :hmpf: diabetics need to ad 30 years to their actual age so it matches how they feel LOL Well diabetics who have been in poor control for the past 31 years anyway:D I have been trying to force myself to stay up during the day but i am not sure how long that will last the providgil they gave me seemed to help yesterday but they are fighting with medicare to pay it so who knows meanwhile i go back to the pharmacist every week and get 7 more trial pills LOL what a joke oh well if it works I should be thankful and not complain right.

Pooh, I was anemic for over 20 years. At one point my blood count was 6.9 and the doctors did a blood transfusion. Their fear was, if I were to have any kind of accident with blood loss, I would not survive with a red count like mine. The other issue they found was tiny red blood cells. The ones I had were small and not plump like they should have been. There was no reason they could find for the anemia, so all we could assume was it was due to heavy periods. Now at 53, I no longer have either issue.

During this really stressful time on my body, I was exhausted. I was able to push through the tired, but it wasn't fun. I had to work and had five kids to raise. I am so sorry for your extreme tiredness. Get the tests done and get some answers. I feel 100x's better now that I am not anemic. You have no clue how tired you really are until you feel better.

Another thing that disturbs me is that I haven't had my period in over a year. Last one was March 2006. I'm 39 now, was 38 when they stopped. I meant to ask my PCP about it when I saw her in October but forgot. I kinda just stopped thinking/worrying about it. I've never had any gynecological issues to deal with before so always used my PCP for routine tests. It's not like I miss having my period but I am a little worried. I haven't had any menopausal symptoms either. I was going along regularly, then one month it just never showed up.

my endocronologist just wrote me back and said that me having poor control of my diabetes for so long could have stressed out my kidneys and cause anemia but if I keep them under good control that it should just reverse itself so I am pretty sure I am going to cancel the colonoscapy lol

Liz, I think I started menopause at about 43, but it took 6 years for it to be completely done. I think the first time, I went 6 months without a period, and thought I was done. Then it came back with a vengeance on and off for a year. I was ready to be rid of it, but saw my doctor (Doogie Howser, if anyone remembers), and he insisted I was way to young. He put me on hormones, that made my legs hurt something terrible, and I just quit taking them. I never had the symptoms that you read about, no night sweats, bad moods, hot flashes, etc. If I had it to do over, I would have seen a Gyn. I often wonder if not doing so caused some of the problems that I had in the next few years. So, get checked out, I know how terrible the exam is, but it needs done. :)

I have to make an appointment with my PCP for a physical soon anyway (should have been done last month, but I like to put things off) so I'll ask her about it then and also ask her to recommend a gynecologist. It's been 14 months since my last period and for a long time I was afraid it would start again and catch me unprepared. A couple of people told me it probably stopped because I lost a lot of weight, but I'm not skinny now, just at the higher end of normal.

I don't know why your doctor gave you hormones if you didn't have any symptoms. Right now I definitely wouldn't take any.

My periods were never that heavy to begin with so I don't think that had anything to do with becoming slightly anemic in my case.
