I used Lente insulin for 32 years except when I tried NPH, UltraLente, and Lantus. Each of those insulins provided worse control for me than the previous one, so I always went back to Lente. I am extremely sensitive to fast acting insulins like regular and humalog, so I wasn't able to try the 70/30 or the 80/20.

Since they stopped making Lente recently, I changed to NPH again. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked any better this time than it did years ago when I used it. I have tried many variations, such as taking insulin at different times, eating at different times, and using different injection sites, but so far no luck. My endocrinologist has no ideas, and asked me, "what are we going to do"? (Not much help there)

I was wondering if anyone has switched from using Lente to using NPH with sucess, or if anyone has any ideas as to how I can make NPH work more like Lente? Also, if anyone knows of a company in another country that still makes Lente, I would appreciate any information on it. Thanks for reading.

You could try Levemir. Or a pump, but if you can't use fast acting insulins, that no worky.

The only suggestion I have is to ask your Dr to help you inport bovine insuline that still comes in lente form. You can get it from the UK.

I have to ask what makes you say NPH doesn't work? I also have to ask what makes you think you are sensitive to fast acting insulins?

Yeah, I'd like some data/stats on your issues: times you took your insulin, how much, and blood sugar readings with meal times. Between the thousands of experts here, we can at least get you closer to your goal of control if not completely into your target range.

Thanks so much SueM. I've already started working on attempting to get some of this. I used the beef Lente when I was a kid, so I don't expect any problems.
