I have a question regarding Protein Shakes (supplements). I currently am on Lantus and Humalog, and am a very active person. Sometimes I like to drink a protein shake (20 grams of whey) at dinner or at breakfast. It seems that whenever I drink this, my two hour post-meal sugar is fine but then my three hour is high. Should I take Regular with my meal? Does anyone have any advice or experience? Those of you on MDI, how do you account for protein?
Thanks
Adam

I drink plenty of 100% whey protein shakes with something like 2 carbs per serving in them. They dont affect me at all, not what i have noticed. Is it 20g whey and carbs or just the protein?

It is the Designer Whey. I think it is two carbs per scoop.

I'm afraid I'd be taking the most simple way out, which means, bolus at 3 hours to bring me back into good range.
But then, like all free advice, it's worth what you paid for it.

I use Designer Whey after a workout and for an afternoon snack and I've never had any problems with high blood sugar. Do you mix the powder with water or milk? Obviously, milk would raise your BS more than water would. You could always try casein protein (milk protein) instead of whey as it takes longer to digest. I use casein in skim milk as a snack before bed to keep my sugars level overnight.

Are you on Lantus or on a pump? I'm kinda wondering if my Lantus is running out.

If you are conuming more protein than is needed to satisfy amino acid requirements, much of it gets converted to glucose. Which could be why your BG is rising. The best time for a protein shake is after a workout. Amino acids are taken up to repair and build mucle. And glucose is used to restore glycogen reserves. I bolus for post-workout protein shakes, which I make with milk.

I use Lantus and Humalog. I used to take a shot of Lantus in the evening until I realized my lack of control post-dinner was partially due to the Lantus running out after only about 18-20 hours. I switched my shot to the morning before my workout (around 7am) and have had much better control since. Many people on this board also split their dose (half in the evening, half in the morning) which also seems to work for some.

I drink Optimum Whey Gold protein shakes whenever I hit the gym and the high level of protein in those shakes doesn't seem to affect me negatively whatsoever. One scoop has 3 or 4 grams of carbs and 24+ grams of protein (i usually drink 2 scoops on my gym days), I usually consume 100-200 grams of protein a day (depending on my level of activity) and it rarely has an impact on BG's unless is accompanied by lots of simple carbs or sugar. I'm also on Humalog

Do you bolus with Novolog or with Regular?

I started to bolus with Novolog mainly because I don't carry Regular around with me. And it seems to work fine. I suspect that the bolus is essentially dealing with glucose from the milk. The protein probably increases BG somewhat too. But the effect seems to be quite small and doesn't seem to outlast Novolog.
