Hey my name is Andrew. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 14 and have been on a pump since I was about 16. I am currently using the animas IR1250. I dont have any insurance and the supplies for my diabetes (insulin, resivors, infusion sets etc.) are killing me. I am self employed so I dont have the option of getting insurance through employment. Does anyonne have any suggestions for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank in advance!:)

Welcome to the forums! Can you tell us where you're located?

That's not much info, but there's always discount prices at hospitals. I've gone to Metro Hospitals and got an 80% discount for years.

Also, try calling or writing (or both) the drug companies that make the medications you need. They may offer it to you at a low cost. At least, that's what their websites say!

Hi Andrew,

Some states have co-ops for small businesses that you can join and get access to insurance, the same as the big companies. I'm in CA, and there's one at www.calchoice.com.

Also, in the short term, if you need emergency supplies sometimes the folks over at insulin-pumpers.org have some available.

Shop around for supplies - you don't have to buy them from Animas and you may find other pharmacies online or otherwise that offer lower prices.

I hope this helps you some

Andrew,

It's my understanding that Animas has a program for people who may not be able to afford pump supplies. The diabetes educator just told me this today when I met with her. My advice would be to call Animas or your talk directly with your pump rep about your situation. Hope this helps.

Hey i am located in the nashville , tn area....I have heard of insulin pumpers i will check it out. I also found that if you order insulin from canada its tons cheaper. I was paying $100 for a 10 mL vial of novolog here and when I order it through canada, I can get three vials for that price! Thank you so much for all of your help!

Andrew - as a fellow pumper I really hope things work out well for you. As an American citizen I hope we all can vote for and support our representatives in government who support universal healthcare. We have universal access to roads, libraries, safe food...so why not health care?

Vote your disease.
