What time do you take the shots? I take one at 6:00 am and one at 10:00 pm but it seems as though my after dinner sugars are always running a bit higher than normal. Any suggestions?

When I was on Lantus, I took the split dose 12 hours apart. 5:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Perhaps you need to increase your a.m. lantus a bit or increase your bolus insulin to carb ratio for dinner.

What happens when you skip dinner? How do you know it's not your bolus?

I agree with Menace, you should skip dinner to make sure it's not your bolus ratio that's wonky.
As for splitting the dose, I actually take 21 units at 10 a.m. and 5 units at 10 p.m. It keeps me from going high during the day when I use the most insulin and keeps me from going low at night when I use the least amount of insulin (could be reverse for some people). I know most people split their's half and half but I found that didn't work for me very well. Might be something to consider if you still go high even if you skip dinner.

I have 70 units at 11pm, and 20 units at 10am. I tried other ways, but I still have high fasting numbers, but am usually really good all day and through the night. If I could get up between 4 and 5 am and take some Novolog, I think it would take care of the high fasting, as that seems to be when it starts rising....just too hard to do as I usually do not get to sleep until 1 or 2 in the morning.
I do a 50/50 split exactly 12 hours apart. For me it provides a pretty much perfect flat line of basal all day every day, according to my basal tests. It's only eating that stuffs me up... pffft!

Great minds think alike, that's exactly what I do too. :D

I usually take my Lantus 12 hours apart(give
or take an hour or 2 occasionally). As I
mentioned before, if I wake a few hours later
than expected then I take my next shot still
12 hours or so later.
I take 12 units first dose and 8 units the second
dose which work well for me. It's usually around
8 a.m and 8 pm.
The Sens/Sabres game was today so the partying
afterwards required more bolus for me, of course.
(YEAH!!! Go Sens Go!!*:D*)
If your basal is correct and your sugars are too high
after the 2-3 hour check then perhaps you just didn't
bolus enough units. Or if this is just recent it could be
an illness creeping in, stress, weather, food made
differently, etc. You know the routine. ;)
Good Luck and Take Care Adam. :)

I also take mine 12 hrs. apart-if I wake up late I take it as close to the reg. times I'm supposed to take it (6:30 am&pm17U/15U) an hour or so doesn't hurt-I have found that the more regular I am with dosing and my heart meds, the better off I feel and all bloodwork has stated that I'm doing good-I have too many roller coaster rides, but I know why I have them all.:o

24 units 6am and 6pm. I found that my body need around 1 unit per hour and about 8 units altogether to convert the morning glucogen dump. I also lower the Lantus(glargine) by a few units when exercising the next day, but only if its going to be all day. It can be very dangerous to be going hypo when you have burnt up every bit of glucose reserve. A good hydration prep with sodium helps recover and keep the metabolism stable. Carbo Gel stuffed up my wetsuit sleeves at all times.
