I get my prescriptions from Caremark, mail order. Tonight I was checking some stuff on their web site and entered Ketostix. It looks like they're covered by my insurance. Caremark has two entries for them, in vials and foil wrapped. I have never seen them foil wrapped, only vials. Since I never use an entire vial before they expire I'm interested in the individually wrapped ones. Has anyone actually seen them? I had trouble with my infusion site today and ended up with a BG over 300, and still had to walk a half hour to get home to change it (went up a little more even with a correction). I got my vial of Ketostix out and saw that I had written the date I opened them, June 2006. The color didn't change when I used one, stayed negative although the negative color looked aoff to begin with.

Next time I see my doctor I'm going to get a prescription for the Ketostix, but want to make sure the foil packs exist before I have her write for those.

Liberty sends me mine foil wrapped. I got a crapload of them. Like, 200. I don't think 200 is a 3 month supply of ketone strips for me, since I only check once in a blue moon, but whatever. The foil wrapped ones stay fresh longer, and are nice for on the go as long as you have the color chart memorized.

It is possible even with a bg that high that you didn't have ketones, seeing as it doesn't sound like you were high very long.

It might be a good idea to keep spare sets at work ;)

Thanks. I'll make sure to ask for foil wrapped. I certainly don't need 200 at a time either. The vials of 50 always expire long before I use even a fraction of them. I do have a vial at work as well, and I didn't write the date on it but I know it was opened last year as well.

I probably didn't have ketones because I think a tiny bit of insulin was getting through. If I had no insulin at all my BG would have been off the meter after eating and exercising.

I have the foil wrapped kind as well. I actually keep them in my purse, and the chart fits into the same pocket in my purse as the strips do.

They last a really long time foil wrapped. :)

I've heard that if your Ketostix (or similar) are old, you can get a false negative, but not a false positive.
