Just got the work today that I am diabetic...I'm 50 years old and not quite sure what to make of the information. I don't know much of anything about diabetes but I'm sure I'm gonna learn.

Hi Dave welcome to "the family." Tell us a little about yourself and your treatment. Getting that diagnosis is stressful and frightening, but it does get easier as you learn more about it.

I know you'll find lots of great information here, friendly folks as well. Look around and ask plenty of questions.

I would recommend a great book for you, "Type II Diabetes, The First Year," by Gretchen Becker...it was (and is) a great source of good information for anyone new to diabetes.

Glad you found the forum.

Linda:)

Thanks Linda, I only found out a couple of hours ago so it's still sinking in...I immediately did a Google search for information and was amazed at the information available and detailed information that the doctors should tell you about and don't. They don't take the time.
I go in tomorrow to find out exactly where I stand and what needs to be done...I glad I found this forum. i'll keep checking in...

Dave, everyone here has been just where you are today....please keep coming back and posting...it helps so much. This is the first forum i've ever posted to as well, and it has been a lifesaver.

When you see your doctor, ask if he will give you a monitor...most office have a free supply given to them by the drug reps...they make their $$ off the strips, so they want you to have their particular monitor. Get your monitor and have your doctor write an Rx for you to test you blood 4 times a day, that way, you'll get 100 strips/month (that's what most ins. covers, but they give you the amt. the doc writes it for and many only tell you to test once a day..this is not enough!.)

When you get your monitor, TEST A LOT! Pricking your finger is hard to think about at first, but trust me, you'll get used to it soon. This will help you determine what affect certain foods will have on your blood sugar and help you make smarter choices. Testing is so important for good control.

You'll do fine! Hang in there and keep us posted.

Linda

What books are recommended reading for Diabetes?

Dave, the Becker book that I mentioned previously in this post is my absolute favorite of all i've read. As for cookbooks, I have bought a couple of low-carb cookbooks, but mostly I just eat as before with the exception of white bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and sugar.
