I am searching for other type 1 diabetics. So far I have only found 3 worldwide. There must be more of us.

Peace out

Rich

I used to when I lived in San Diego. I am not near the ocean anymore so I don't go out much at all.

What size board you ride? How's the water where you live?

Its a shame you can't get out more.

I have a 7' 6" mal and a 6'6" shortboard.

The water is a lot cleaner these days thanks to Surfers Against Sewage - Not just Surfers, Not just Sewage (http://www.sas.org.uk). Depends which part of the island you are on. I surf a place called Polzeath in Cornwall. Very nice indeed. Have surfed all around the UK. Some really good reef breaks if you know where to look.
The tempreture isn't good, have to wear the neoprene most of the time.

Yeah skimboarding is close enough. In fact any board riding is close enough.

I surf, but I am not that good by any means. I used to have a 7'4 fun shaped - which was my long board because I am only 5ft. I still have a 6'2 fish shaped that I should try to get out and use soon! I haven't been out since i went on the pump in aug. last year....

You find another surfer here!!!from Greece!!!

Greek surfer. wow. I did a bit of bodyboarding in Crete a few years back. Are there good breaks near you?

So how do you surfers among us keep the BG in check whilst out in the ocean?
I carry lucozade carbo gel up my wetsuit sleeves and worked out I need one after being out around an hour. But that depends on the swell size and how much effort required paddling out.

f that!! I am a warm water surfer. 50% of the time I ride in cold water I get a cold. The closer to the equater, the better :). God bless your love of the sport. I have never tried neoprene, my wet suit is a 4/3. If I go any thicker it makes it to hard to paddle.

I ride a 6'3 (round back; I am only 5'8") but it's been a while so the next time I go out I'll probably use a 10' for a day or two as the 6'3 would be pretty squirrly under me at first. I surf goofy footed so I enjoy the breaks left to right.

Are you a big wave rider?

I'm getting a little better, but still trying to catch the waves just right, back when I was younger I could've been a sponsored skateboarder, but not enough time with school and all, BTW I live in Florida, they just had the nations Surfboarding competition a few weeks ago in Cocoa. Peace!

Hey I am a right footed goofy too.

I am progressing to larger waves. The biggest I have ridden is about 7 foot overhead height. But gets a bit scary bailing on big waves. And you need to be really fit.
Its so good to hear from you all.
Maybe we could have a diabetic surf team.lol maybe not

I live with a surfer (san diego) does that count. He has quite a quiver - about 12 boards, a couple long boards that are really really long =- he's 6/6" He shapes and glasses his own boards. Was rather worried when Clark Foam went down. He is using new materials these days and experimenting. My surfing is limited to listening to him wax on and on about the engineering of surfing.

YAY SURFING!!!! :D I am actually leaving for the coast in 2 days to go surfing out in Tofino... a place of beauty. I also enjoy wakeboarding, and I get out to do that way more than to surf since I don't have an ocean closer than a 20 hour drive.

Awesome! For the blood sugar checks I used to go in every hour or so depending on how I was feeling. A long time ago when I wasn't taking that great care of myself I would just eat a large fatty breakfast and not worry about it until the end of the day:stupid:

I always eat plenty of slow release complex carbs in the morning around 2 hours before I go out. And a shed load of protein for the old muscles. I have found I can stay out for around two hours as long I carry 2 carbo gel. I usually use at least one. It would be handy if testing between sets was possible.lol.
I have dropped low a few times whilst out but neve caused any probs. If I feel a little odd I just ride back in. I often find that my body tempreture is a good indication for dropping low. Can be a pain sometimes coz I don't have any hypo warning signs any more. And if miscalcutlated insulin/carb ratio and spike I have trouble breathing.
But I don't let this stop me. I love it too much. Its pure soul food and after all it's all about balance.

Any of you had bad expeiances?

And do you have any pics of your local breaks or where you have or have not surfed.

peace out, be excellent to each other and party on dudes!

Hi Rich, I've been type1 for 52 years..... They say that only about 5% are type 1's. I'm also looking for type1 communication. Nice to meet you.

A diabetic surf-and-greet would be effin awesome. Count me in if anyone gets it rolling. Baja would be nice if anyone is down. I'd be willing to travel over seas as well. As long as there is warm water I will go.

As far as bad experiences go, once, before I knew how to read the breaks I got caught in a rip tide while low. I didn't know how to get out of a riptide back then and I just kept paddling against it, and just kept getting lower and lower. A guy on shore yelled out to me "paddle left! paddle left! Then come in". I followed his directions and my effin medicalert bracelet broke right when I got to shore. I needed sugar so bad I didn't even bother trying to get it out. I just ran to my towel and drank the juice I had.

Now when I go out I tuck 2 gels in, and have my meter, strips, and glucagon in a dry sack. Never had to test while riding but after that riptide incident, and a couple of other stints I am always over prepared.

That's just one bad experience I have had. Most of the time, when it's warm water, its super fun and I effin love it.

How about you Jsurfer? Any bad/great experiences? Have you gotten all the way through a barrel? Goofy footers rule! :).
