Hi All,
This is my first time on this site. I was diagnosed with type 2 just a week before Thanksgiving. I'm looking for suggestions for breakfast. I keep reading that oalmeal is a wonderful breakfast, but it shoots my BG up to 200. This is high for me. Also, I don't care for eggs. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Welcome.
Oatmeal is usually a brutal choice. I eat multi-grain toast.

Oatmeal makes mine high as well. On the other hand Cream of Wheat seems to be okay unless I get very active. Then I get a liver dump and my bg's can be in the 140's at 2 hours. Also I add a little butter to it to slow down the digestion of it.

Peanut butter on whole grain toast is pretty good...the peanut butter is a tasty, healthy source of protein, and that's a good way to start the day! There's also a Special K low carb cereal that is pretty good....I usually slice a banana or add some raisins for a little extra in it.
(but what I'd really like is a big plate of hash browns! :D )

I also eat whole grain toast and coffee. I found a semi-good choice for butter alternative (although I prefer butter) I use Smart Choice and add a bit of salt substitute. It is ok.

i love oatmeal. what i'll do is take a pack of the quaker instant stuff (peaches & cream, or apple and cinnamon), mix in 1/6 cup of instant oats, and add a bit more than 3/4 cup of boiling hot water. as long as my insulin was taken before i start boiling the water in the kettle, my BS doesn't get any higher than 7-ish... (that's like 126).
i also discovered mixing the above with cold water, and microwaving is a BAD, BAD idea. it spikes up the BS much faster and higher than the hot water in the kettle, as the oats are cooked much more. (the just barely cooked oats temper the BS much better)

I find the from-scratch oatmeal (as opposed to instant oats) is much better for bloodsugar stability. I like steel-cut oats. They take a while to make, so I tend to make a lot at once and then freeze serving-sized portions to reheat in the microwave.
I also like muesli with yogurt and berries. Mmmm.....

HI & Welcome!
I can't do oatmeal either. I usually eat light wheat toast or light english muffins. I also like Special K Protein Plus cereal with low carb milk.

As Belyro and whoami say it all depends on the porrridge, some are much faster than others. They vary a lot. Maybe trying a different type might help.
instant porridge oats made with water and microwaved had a glycemic index of of 82 (very fast)
'instant' porridge : G1 of 65
steel cut or traditional oats cooked with water: G1 51
porridge made with rolled oats 58-75 depending on where the oats were grown.
I couldn't find any G1 for porridge made with milk which would presumably be slower but slightly higher in carbs.

One thing you might try if you really like your oatmeal is "steel cut" oatmeal. I eat that sometimes (buy it in bulk it is cheaper) and it does not effect my blood sugar as much.

Anything, but especially grains first thing in the morning, will cause mine to go between 170 and 199. I started taking metformin in May and it is helping my morning numbers greatly.

I will have a slice of sourdough bread with peanut butter a small bananna and 4oz of milk or, glucerna raisin bran with carb/sugar control or whole wheat pancakes with butter and a couple of scrambled eggs with a slice of lowfat cheese.

there is a low sugar version of oatmeal and a sugar free one that I found at Walmart......also they have PNB wafers made with splenda that I sometimes eat on a quick breakfast on the run. My breakfast consist of a banana (daily) and either a mini bagel, oatmeal, cereal or a breakfast wrap from lean cusine/southbeach etc.....or if I have watermelon, berries in the fridge I eat them along with the banana and yogurt.

I've not done well with oatmeal...any kind. I like the S. Beach high protein cereal bars..they are really good and easy. As for eggs, I've never been a big fan, but they have so little effect on my blood sugars that I will have them occasionally...I have developed a taste for omelettes...may you would, too if you'd try them with different ingredients. Cheese and apple is also a filling alternative....or apple and a spoonful of peanut butter...or a protein shake.
Also, there's no hard and fast rule that you have to have b/fast foods for b/fast...if there's something you like for lunch/dinner, have it for b/fast...I do that as well sometimes.

As people have said, steel cut or irish oats are your best bet. Especially with a protein. Omelettes are a good choice. I cook the ingediants in the pan first and then pour the egg over the top. They cook faster that way. Add a hot sausage and you're good to go. I also like whole grain cereals such as Kashi. I mix and match flavors to keep from getting bored. And add fruit. I'm going to start adding protein powder to it to see how that works out.
You may also want to do what I do. Ignore advice from anyone who says blah, blah, blah and take insulin. They are usually type 1 and think type 2's are all on insulin. They may be trying to be helpful but it's not. They may be trying to brag which for the life of me, I cannot imagine why. Most type 1 understand and will offer good advice, this thread is a good example

while we are on the subject of breakfast, has anyone seen the commercials on d-life tv, for the Glucerna cereal? I was wondering if anyone in the family here has tried them?

For me, whole wheat toast, Earth Balance margarine, and Morning Star Farms sausage patties. I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't like the greasiness of regular sausage.

I have tried the Glucerma cereal and love it! My after-breakfast readings are great since I started eating it. I use skim milk with it.

Where did you get it? Is that an on-line thing only?
I am a type 2 now for about 2 years. I do eat oatmeal but use only 1/4 or 1/8 of a cup and then I am ok. If I use more then I get into trouble with the blood sugar reading higher. I put a sweetner in the oatmeal alone with a tsp of diabetic jam like, strawberry and ect.

speaking of omelettes Egg Beaters has the stuff mixed in already so all you have to do is shake and pour. They are quite tasty....add cheese and you have a quick meal.
